Okay, so the office Christmas Holiday party this year is cocktails and dinner. Which brings up the question of what one wears to cocktails and dinner. I'm guessing that my own fashion sense is not a good thing to go with in this instance because I distinctly remember having the following conversation with my sister while shopping:
Me: It's a pretty dress, but what would I wear it for?
green_tea_lady: In case you ever got invited to a cocktail party?
Me: What are the odds of that happening? And anyway, I don't need a dress for a cocktail party.
green_tea_lady: Oh you don't, don't you? And what would you wear to a cocktail party?
Me: Black slacks? A nice sweater, maybe a blouse?
green_tea_lady: *appalled silence*
Me: What?
green_tea_lady: You really would do that, wouldn't you? Just show up in your work slacks and a shirt you got at Old Navy. I can see you doing it, and it hurts me.
Me: Why?
green_tea_lady: How am I even friends with you?
So, what do you wear to a cocktail party?
ETA: Ha ha, yes, I totally blanked on the fact that there is such a thing as a "cocktail dress". I think I knew that at some point, but I'd forgotten. Dur. So is that the extent of my options, or are there alternatives that do not involve blowing perfectly good money on a dress that I won't be able to wear again? (Not that I would mind owning about half the results that come up when you google "cocktail dress"...just...money.)
Bride of ETA: Okay, so with some trepidation I e-mail the office manager to see if she had the scoop on the dress code. Turns out it's not a cocktail party, just a party with cocktails (kind of like how you can have friends who are boys but not boyfriends, I guess). She described the event as "a country Christmas" but added that we couldn't wear jeans. *eyebrow* Which seems like conflicting information to me, but whatever.
