We made ginger and chicken stir-fry on Tuesday (some of my fingernails are still yellow from the turmeric) and had another episode of Ernie Tries to Use Big Words With Limited Success.

Me: Please scrub that really well, salmonella is not nice.

Ernie: Oh, I know, my mom got it once.

Mother-in-law: I got what once?

Ernie: Sama...salamanana...thingy. From raw chicken.

Mother-in-law: Oh, salmonella.

Ernie: Yes. Sumalaria.

green_tea_lady: Sumalaria?

Ernie: *laughs* Wait, I said it wrong. Sumalaria's, like...a country in Africa, or something.

green_tea_lady: You mean malaria?

Ernie: Yeah.

green_tea_lady: Malaria's a disease.

Me: Which is unfortunately very common in Africa, though I don't think they've named a country after it quite yet.

Ernie: *laughs and hits head* Where did I come up with that?

Mother-in-law: Maybe it's better if we don't ask.

random interludes, words are delicious, ernie
