I love this time of year. I usually spend half of November and all of December in a state of barely containable excitement. There’s just something so great about the holiday season.

There are all the get togethers where you get to see family and friends and even though you see them other times, somehow doing it at the holidays makes it special. It feels like we appreciate each other more when we gather for Thanksgiving or Christmas. There’s laughing and storytelling and shared memories that form a bond between everyone. People are in the kitchen helping with the cooking and other people are wandering around being schnoitrissels and then there’s the play spoon smacking or chasing out of the kitchen and more laughing.

There’s that feeling you get when you find the perfect present for someone. You see it and you just know that a specific person is going to love it. After you get it and it’s all wrapped and sitting under the tree you’re dancing inside with excitement just picturing them opening your gift and seeing that perfect present.

There are all the decorations that change the room or house you look at every day for 11 months into something different and almost magical. The tree in the corner with all it’s twinkling lights and ornaments, ornaments with their own stories of love and time and craftsmanship. When you turn off the lights and plug in the tree it makes everything softer and timeless. There are the decorations that you look for every year and remember seeing since you were a little kid. Decorations that have memories tucked away inside of them that you can revisit every time you look at them. There are the lights on all the houses that when turned on at night change your humdrum street into something enchanting.

There are the traditions that are observed every year. That special plate at dinner, your grandmother’s recipe for something, a trip to the mall with your family, the game playing after dinner when you’re all too full to move. Traditions that bring everyone closer together in the observance.

There’s the food. There are the smells in your house when you start the holiday baking- cinnamon, vanilla, warm cookies. There are the foods that you make every year for the holidays and the ones you just want to try this time. There’s the anticipation waiting for that first springerle to come out of the oven or the camaraderie of everyone working together to decorate the holly leaves. There’s the good-natured acceptance of the people who are sent to the store at least four times in one day to get something that was forgotten or suddenly needed for a modified recipe. There’s the pleasure and pride in giving away food that you and your family have worked on so hard but with such joy and togetherness.

I love this time of year.
