Just got back from Christmas party with my job. Lots of fun.
Hey, did you know that it is quite possible to become so obsessed with allusions that you have trouble taking things in its original meaning? When I was reading through S.' list of things she was thankful for in relation to the holiday known as American Thanksgiving I was like.. "yeah, guess so.. good point.. sure.. WTF?!?! The kindness of strangers?! I mean, yeah, that might be considered somewhat cool and sexy, but.. to actually be thankful for it? That's.. vile!" It actually took me quite a while to realize that she was not using the Nick Cave meaning of the expression[1]. Feel free to draw you own moral from this story.
Anyway.
McDonalds is currently on my list of endorsed company as they gave me a free coffee[2] since I had to wait four minutes for my burger and fries to be ready. Conversely, Stravinsky in Oslo is most assuredly not, as they don't even have ginger ale.
In quite another story, when I was on the subway the other day there was this guy there who talked on the phone and used the word "like" about twice as much as is socially acceptable for a teenage chick who'll sleep with anyone after three drinks[3]. It was quite awful. He was quite well into his twenties, even.
[1]The first stanza of The Kindness of Strangers from Murder Ballads is "They found Mary Bellows cuffed to the bed / With a rag in her mouth and a bullet in her head / O poor Mary Bellows". I'm sure you can guess the basic points of the song from here on.
[2]That the temperature and flavor of McDonalds coffee makes it more suitable as a short-range weapon than a beverage is nihil ad rem.
[3]I hope I'm not over-defining jargons here.
