Birthday Rewatch 2023

Jun 08, 2023 20:36

My birthday was last month, but I was in Japan, so I did not have time to do my traditional SPN Birthday Rewatch! So I did it today. For this rewatch, I've been watching whatever Supernatural episode is closest to Sam and Dean's birthdays, for the age I am turning ( Read more... )

Well spoken. I often question the experience of people who never saw it in production and binge-watch after the fact. They miss out on a lot of discussion and projection and speculation in the week between episodes. I always go to Devil's Trap and the car marooned in the pasture, hot metal ticking in the silence and...fade to black.

Latecomers never realized the bitten fingernail waiting each season till we heard SPN had been picked up for another season, and the first four seasons were really iffy. In S1E22, not only did we not know what happened after fade to black, we didn't know if we'd ever find out, if the show was cancelled.

But as you say, watching show to show built a certain kind of tension that couldn't be reproduced by binge watching. And episodes watched out of the brackets of that season's run always have some small thing, some transition, some foreshadowing detail we (I) missed in its season run. It was a good show.

Also, hello. Good to see you here.

I really love both experiences--the immediacy and energy of the as-its-airing watching and discussing, but also being able to sit with just the episode and me, or to be able to see the past and present that bookends the episode all laid out. Infinite rewatchability, truly, LOL.

Hello to you, too! It's lovely to see you! <3

Yay, glad you got to do your birthday rewatch! I've missed seeing you squee over this show, even if I still barely know what you're talking about ♥

Ahahahaha. I am clearly still working my way to ACTUALLY BEING ON HERE MORE, but I'm very proud of myself for doing the rewatch, even though I missed the ~official~ timing window! (Lol, "official," I say, as though I weren't watching these by myself, in accordance with a tradition I made for myself. But you know what I mean!)

Thanks for your reasoning. I miss discussing the series. Always discussed, argued after each viewing. I like the 6.12 series. But starting from season 5, the conflict is not between the guys and everyone around, but between Sam and Dean. And this will continue in almost every season. I had to get used to it, at first I didn’t want it at all. I didn’t like the Claire, most likely because I didn’t really like the “well-groomed, well-fed” girl from the orphanage myself. Especially the one that suddenly knows how to play the "game of the privileged box office" golf. The same goes for Dean. It's one thing to make money playing billiards or playing cards that were played in every bar, and golf is another thing. It was redundant. Claire, who blamed Dean for her father's death, but didn't blame it on Cas, who was responsible for it. There is so much injustice in this character that I don't like her.

Hahaha, I'm the other type of fan, who liiiives for late-season SPN (or lower 2/3rds SPN, since in my mind S5 is the "halfway point" and it is definitely not... the halfway point) and the Sam and Dean relationship it spins out.

idk, I feel like mini golf and golf are very different things (as are golf and movies about golf--gold comedies definitely feel like motel TV fare to me). Mini golf reads epically kitschy to me, whereas when I think about golf I think about, idk, yacht clubs and the like. But a lot of people definitely agree with you re: Claire! I think it doesn't help that Kathryn Newton (I think that's her name) is not necessarily the most developed actor, haha.

Happy Bleated Birthday! Glad you still managed to squeeze in your SPN birthday squee-fest. It really is weird to think the show was actually popular and watched by 'normal' non obsessed folk.

Japan though... I so want to go back and visit for longer than the few days we had back in 2007 - wow so long ago now.

Thank you!! And lol right? I would love a look into their brains. What does this show even look like from that perspective?

I hope you get to go back to Japan, too! Definitely worth more than a few days. I already want to go back, and I haven't even finished going through my photos, etc. from this trip, hahaha. (I've been loving your recent travel photos/updates!!)
