Every year for my birthday, I watch two SPN episodes: The one that aired closest to Dean's birthday and the one that aired closest to Sam's birthday when they were the age that I am turning.

This year was 5x11 "Sam, Interrupted" and 9x20 "Bloodlines." Yeah, I can't believe Sam did me like that, either, but in the scheme of things, it was nice for his birthday to fall in a period of relative calm. He could certainly have done worse at the end of S9. XDD Out of all the episodes back there, from Sam's perspective, the fewest terrible things happened to Sam in 9x20.

My headcanon for 9x20:

Ennis's girlfriend, Tamara, was allergic to silver. He knows this because he'd asked her mother about this when he'd asked for her hand. Tamara's mother thought this was a bit antiquated, frustrating in most men--she's known too many alpha males. But Ennis was the kind who could carry it, someone she'd be pleased to have as a son-in-law. Something new, for Tamara. (Something blue--Tamara's lips, that night when her crushed skull, her severed brainstem, stops regulating her breathing. Something borrowed--that will be Ennis, later. Silver bullets and his father's gun.)

Tamara was allergic to silver.

He'll think about this every time he fingers a silver bullet, committing the runes to memory because he has an inkling he's going to need more. He's going to need lots. He'll think, and he'll postulate, and he'll wonder.

But he will never know.

He'll go to his grave, never knowing.

This "fewest terrible things" deal is not hugely true of Dean's episode, which by contrast is unpleasant for both of them, particularly on the heels of Ellen and Jo's deaths in 5x10. That's what they both get for having birthdays that fall near the mid-season premiere and season finale dates, I guess.

I think it's very sweet that Dean's reasoning in 5x11 for why something monster-y has to be afoot is that while the likelihood of either one of them losing their shit is very high, he doesn't seem to believe that statistically they would both lose their shit at the same time. In fairness, they are actually very good at trading off, at least in terms of pure crisis. But I'm also pretty sure that S5 onward is basically both of them losing their shit simultaneously, just in very different ways.

Anyway, I love them. <3333
