I heard this song today and have now been listening to it obsessively because I SamnDean imprinted on it and all my love for them dumped itself onto this song:

I'm going to keep lighting fires
'til someone finds us
I'm sure it won't be long now
(It can't be long now)

I'm going to keep shaking cages
'til bars unbind us
Only worry if there's much of me left
to bury

[lyrics]

As is the case for many rock songs, I'm perfectly happy to take the lyrics entirely literally as they apply to SPN, so I find it very difficult to not think about "shaking cages" as in, The Cage; and all this talk of smoke inside oneself being about demonic/angelic possession, etc. I'm not saying this is an artful reading but it's mostly what I think about, lol. I would make horrible music videos.

What really makes this song for me, though, is the measure of self-assurance that also attends the usual stock angsty rock imagery. In the face of all this horror and sadness, they keep going. And I love that there are so many potentials in the line "I'm going to keep lighting fires / 'til someone finds us." On one hand, it makes me think about the act of fire-lighting where it concerns illumination, finding people, finding people outside of themselves and remaining open to these connections. SPN is about Sam and Dean out on the edge alone, but it is also about the important connections that they do make--to Jody, Charlie, Castiel, etc. And it's about the connections with the people they save, or who save them, or whom they watch save themselves.

On the other hand, there's also the salt and burn--lighting delinquent fires, causing trouble, being generally a disruptive force in the world of the supernatural, and committing to being those people even if it draws fire from Heaven and Hell. In that way, it's not just lighting fires hoping to be save or found/aided, but also fires you're lighting with full knowledge that there are things that are looking for you, and they're out for blood. Bring it.

Some of the cages, too, are literal. The Cage. The strictures of demon deals and Heavenly prophecies and belligerent gods and all in between. Maybe they're also the cages more organic to Sam and Dean themselves--the ways they understand themselves and each other and the world. There's just something in this chorus that feels necessary to life, even as it may just as easily tear you apart (and how much will there be left to bury?).

I just love them so much. <33333333
