Kansas Byways: US-36

Sep 02, 2021 22:38

The last few weeks have been completely off the wall, but for part of it my sister and I drove across the country (she is moving from Boston to Modesto). We passed through Kansas in one shot, and about a third of the way through my sister asked, "What's a good stopping point for Jax?" (Her dog ( Read more... )

On our trip I kept bringing up that I'd been to this or that random town before, or that motel, or that highway, and I think she thought it was weird. But if you cross the country enough times AND watch Supernatural even more times, you've basically been to every town, right? (Omg, what an excellent/degranged roadtrip that would be, though--every location from every SPN episode... in the order that they appear in the episodes. If they go to multiple cities in one episode, you have to go to all of them. Yes, even if it's Sioux Falls AND somewhere in Scotland. Heaven, Hell, the Empty, Purgatory, and any time-traveling are optional but recommended.)

That would be an amazing trip. And I think it would take at least 15 years. Maybe longer.

They are, thank you! I think long roads, industrial agriculture, and Jesus sums up Kansas's roadside aesthetic pretty well. *I* enjoy driving through Kansas but I don't think my sister cared much for it. XD

I was wracking my brain why Modesto sounded familiar and of course you enlightened me. Thank you. 😂

I am pretty sure that the Pilot is the only reason Modesto might ever sound familiar to anyone. XDD NO OFFENSE TO PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN MODESTO...

Heeeeeeeeeee!
Having driven across Kansas several times, I can't say I *enjoyed* it, exactly. It's basically 'field field field house with three trees, field, field, field', and pretty soon you (or, I, at least) am diving about 110 miles an hour because you never seem to *get* anywhere and the friggin road is straight and flat and endless.

And then you cross the boarder into Colorado and nothing changes and you just wanna drive FASTER to just GET THERE. :D

I honestly enjoy Kansas! US-36 is a good boy. Sometimes it has sunflowers! And I like the Glacial Hills, too. I don't like that the Kansas Turnpike costs money but I suppose it's a nice road. Kansas requires minimal driving effort and I appreciate that.

It's not hard, it's true, but oh man, sometimes it about puts you to sleep.

I hated driving across Oklahoma- toll roads EVERYWHERE, I swear we paid like fifteen tolls before we were through.

Omg, Oklahoma, why. That was my experience of Miami (and it was annoying because until you pulled up you didn't know if it was a credit card toll booth, a cash-only toll booth, or a "we'll mail you a bill later" toll booth--the SUSPENSE), but at least Miami has the excuse of being a cesspool city, where tolls feel more expected than wherever-the-heck, Oklahoma. I got a bill in the mail like 8 months later for $14 and I was like... Miami. Pls. Collect yourself.
