The past is not how you remember it.

I was going through this journal trying to find a photograph I knew I'd taken of a birthday cake I'd made for my favorite Bleach character, and ended up going through all the entries in my Archive that had "Bleach" in the title. (This was before LJ had a tagging system, or at least before it became more of a convention on this platform ( Read more... )

I've never heard of Bleach - your take on it sounds intriguing...
And L P Hartley was so right - The past is indeed a foreign country; they do things differently there.

Bleach is one of those great, big sprawling anime/manga series with 411 characters and 420492 fight scenes that take like 3 episodes to complete and is comprised of 15 years' worth of slightly confusing mytharcs that don't necessarily match up with each other. Which is, uh, not ideal. XDDDD But luckily its sprawling cast has a lot of beautifully compelling characters, and the core 30 or so are surprisingly multi-faceted and very particularly apart from the archetype they most resemble. Which is really impressive for a cast that huge! And its worldbuilding is to DIE for--that's where it really gets me ( ... )

It turns out I actually have written at least one Bleach fic, and simply have no memory of having done so????????

Oh, man, is finding something you've written but don't remember not among the wildest feelings? It's such a different experience from finding old stuff you remember.

I never really got into Bleach-- which is a little mind-blowing to me, because I was one of those people throwing around the phrase "Shounen Trinity" and acting as if everything else was measured by said trinity and now I don't know why-- but I always thought it looked cool and your fic sounds really neat! Very interesting observation about your attempts to capture summer on the page too! Looking back at old stuff can be cringe-inducing but it's such a fun and intimate look into the past at the same time.

What's the third in the trifecta? Is it One Piece? (Which lol, somehow I also know there's a trifecta but somehow have never read or watched One Piece!)

What's weird is like, even while I was reading Naruto and Bleach simultaneously, and was very definitely in Naruto fandom and very definitely not in Bleach fandom, I still knew that I liked Bleach more? Which doesn't seem like it would make any sense, because I definitely spent a lot more time thinking about Naruto and producing things for Naruto and making Naruto friends, so you'd think it would be reversed. But all that just wasn't the way I wanted to love Bleach, for whatever reason. Even if I did apparently write some fic, and wasn't able to wholly distance myself from that kind of fandom-ing. XDDDD (Though while I was finding this Bleach stuff I was also suddenly overcome with the reminder of my love for INO'S DAD!!!!! <3)

Yep, it was One Piece! Which I was following for a while but fell away from as I started narrowing my focus to and eventually being disappointed by Naruto. My intention used to be to go back to it when it was finished but at this point I feel like it might still be going after the heat death of the universe...

No, no, I get you! Like it's not a matter of how much you like things, it's just how you like them. What you want out of them and what you get out of them. What you would get from fandom that you don't get from canon and whether you want that. And then also, sometimes the mood just strikes.

I WAS JUST THINKING ABOUT HIM THE OTHER DAY!! XD I found notes for an InoSaku fic I wanted to write waaay back when that featured him and was hit full in the face by the nostalgia!
