This is fantastic! Yes, meta, but I LOVE meta. Beautifully, poetically written and oooh, so gorgeously visual. Thank you so much, bb! (Gotta run, but will be back with a much more detailed comment.)
eta: I am just amazed that you pulled this beautiful, heartbreaking story out of my prompt. ♥ If Sam can't save Dean (and indeed it seems that he cannot), nobody's coming back from that beach . . . :(
. . . was that a John Munch reference? The guy who's flashing his badge "in everything," like Law and Order and Homicide? Because I'll love you forever for that ref alone. ♥
It's an old episode of Dr. Sexy--Sam knows because Dr. Sexy's hair is shorter; and he has bangs. Oh, no, you did not. Oh, yes, you did! Also, Sam is Dr. Sexy, Dean has a massive crush on Dr. Sexy, ergo

It was totally a John Munch reference, just for you, bb! <3333 Dean is very obviously misled here, in that he does not recognize the magnificence that is John Munch. And honestly I'm kind of tickled by the possibility that although Sam recognizes the evolution of Dr. Sexy's hair, he probably hasn't made that connection (or thought enough about the evolution of his own hair), hee

It doesn't seem like they'll come back out of the water?
I'm so happy that you referred to my story!! :D Dean actually adapted remarkably well to being an octopus. I purposefully made sure that Sammy also gave him an extra long life. :D
I love your octopus story so much. <333 It's so adorable and special. It got taken up in darker form here, as the Sad required, but I was thrilled by the prospect of being able to make reference to it. Thank you for writing it!!
So meta, so awesome! My favorite is the whole thing about the choice of verbs. Because Sam has always always had to wonder about that re: Dean and his choices.
I'm glad you liked that! Sam turned into a grammarian in this fic for some reason, haha, but it was really interesting to work with, so I'll believe it.
Sam's Dr. Sexy observation was inspired by YOU and your love of Sam's bangs, lady! <33 I'm entertained by the likelihood that even if Sam is aware of the evolution of Dr. Sexy's hair, he probably hasn't made the connection in full.
I figured that since the fic was already so meta, I might as well just so all in and start building in/building on fanworks themselves. SO MUCH FUN.
I really love the interactivity of fandom--remixes, writing within 'verses, etc.--so that felt like a fun way to explore that. Because man, we have plenty of canon to go off of, but we've also written so much ourselves! It seemed only fitting to include our stuff as well. XD I wanted to reference the kroki refur fic that has Sam turning into a bunch of sea creatures, but I couldn't find a way to use it that didn't just reiterate what your fic was already doing, so I restrained myself.
Thank you for reading, bb! And for being cool with me borrowing your tentacles, hehe. :P
THAT MAKES ME EVEN HAPPIER. because Sam's hair/dr. sexy's hair is an amazing thing.
also, bangs!sam deserves all the love, all the time.
If nothing else in fandom, MAYBE I'VE GOTTEN THAT ACROSS
(at least until my birthday, when people will probably, once again post me pics of Jensen Ackles, and then I'll resolve yet again to devote more posts to the beauty of Sam/Jared).
you can borrow my tentacles any time you want, kalliel.
