This is a snippet from an interview Gertrude Stein gave in the 1940s, in which she expresses her concern over the character and the hearts of twentieth century readers and moviegoers. Before this she's talking about how people in the nineteenth century used to live and die by their characters--those in Dickens and George Eliot:
