margaret_leigh I've been working away happily for a couple of months, now on a prequel to my short story Hunter's Kiss which is in the anthology
Another Fine Mess. The writing has been going quite well, and the characters and story developing nicely, until it was all brought to a screeching halt, when one of my beta readers pointed out a couple of points from Hunter's Kiss which I had overlooked in my involvment with the story.
1. Hunter's Kiss actually named a town that exists as being the place where Jack and Casey met
and
2. The character of Jack in this story doesn't seem like the kind of person described in dialogue in Hunter's Kiss by Casey.
"You taught me to hunt vampires, to take them out -- like hunting deer," Casey said. "And when I got hurt on those early hunts, that's what you used to say, 'Anything worthwhile hurts a little, Case.'"
"If you feed from me again, I'll die. Is that what you want?" Jack looked up at his partner, forcing himself to meet those unearthly eyes.
Casey stroked Jack's bare chest, a parody of comfort. "When you taught me how to fight. And the first time you fucked me." He bent close and whispered against Jack's ear. "Anything worthwhile hurts a little."
The thing is, so far, Jack doesn't seem at all the type of person who would teach someone to hunt vampires, or to fight, or that anything worthwhile hurts a little, so either I have a continuity problem on my hands, or there will be a sequel to this prequel.
The specifically named town is more of a problem, because I know nothing about that particular town, and there's not a lot to be found online.
So, what to do?
I guess for now, I will just keep writing, this is a first draft, after all, and I already have some things I will need to fix in the next run through, so maybe I should just not worry so much for now...
*sigh*
We'll see...
