CarnyCon DC !!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From The Carnivale Email list :
All the talk of people organizing their own gatherings has inspired
me.

-----

Announcing CarnyCon*DC July 30-31, to be held in the Washington D.C.
metro region. Plans include screenings, open discussion, academic
paper presentation, contests (show trivia, costume, freak talents),
and expeditions to various Smithsonian museums to examine period
artifacts and historical background.

The dates purposefully conflict with the Flashback Weekend Horror
Convention and Drive-In in Illinois so as to avoid conflicting with
the CarnyCon being planned by Beth & co. (Given that beloved cast
members are already scheduled to appear at its "CARNIVALE Fan Event",
it therefore seems safe to assume and Beth and company will not
schedule their CarnyCon that same weekend.)

There will be no cost to attend, beyond metro fare, thanks to the
munificence of the several local public institutions (universities,
museums) willing to provide meeting and presentation space. (Also,
since no money is changing hands, I'm hoping that publicly screening
Carnivale episodes will violate slightly fewer laws.)

This is intended to be a different sort of event than CarnyCon*LA (or
CarnyCon*Vegas, or wherever it ends up). No cast or crew will be
actively courted to attend. There won't be any autograph lines.
Most crucially, I intend CarnyCon*DC to succeed or fail based on
interest and participation of others. This is not meant to be a
spectator event, but rather a gathering of active participants.

I have floated the above ideas, will make arrangements for the
conference space, would love to perform my knife throwing act at the
talent show, and am willing to act as a clearinghouse to which to
submit academic papers about Carnivale; beyond that I leave it to the
community to fill the conference with events of their own. (Someone
with a better memory than I will need to moderate the trivia
challenge, for example. Someone with a better eye for detail to
judge the costume show. Et cetera.)

The scope of CarnyCon*DC is, it seems to me, dependent upon the
number of participants who show up in an exponential way. For each
person who announces that they will organize/moderate/host a cool
event, people from slightly farther away may be drawn in, which in
turn grows the pool of participants invited to organize their own
conference events. Whether it will be a small, intimate gathering of
fans from D.C., NoVA, and Baltimore or whether it will be a bigger
gathering of fans making long treks is anyone's guess.

To recap:
