For the first time ever, I went to a knitting expo/convention this weekend. It was fun! My cousin taught me how to crochet when we got back. It only took me two hours to learn the basic pattern of a gorgeous shawl. I have to go out and buy some yarn this week so I can start working on my new pattern. I must admit, I feel a little ridiculous about my $200 purchase of the infamous "Jessica Simpson shawl" a couple years back, now that I've basically learned how to crochet the darn thing myself. Still, yarn is pretty expensive. A person can easily spend over $200 on some quality wool slub yarn with silk ribbon.
Learning to crochet was a lot easier than learning how to knit, maybe because I already have my knitting foundation pretty solid. The two do go hand and hand though.
I also went to a denim sample sale on Sunday morning. I got there at 9:30am, waited in the frosty cold for about an hour, realized I wasn't going to gain entrance for at least another 2 hours, and then decided that saving $100 on jeans was not worth 5 hours of my time (2 hours waiting + 2 hours shopping + 1 hour standing in line to pay). That's $20/hour... no thank you! Time is a precious commodity. So around 11:00am I left for Stitches, the knitting convention in Santa Clara -- a very wise decision. I picked up some really cheap yarn and neat patterns for some mitts, hats, and shawls.
Funny scene: an old man drove by while I was in line and asked why there were 1000 women standing around in the cold weather at 9am and dressed like they were going out to a bar. (Ok, he didn't say it in so many words. He basically asked what the line was for... but I'm sure that was what he was thinking!) When I told him we were waiting around for jeans, he looked at us like we were crazy. :) Oh, the lengths women will go for a pair of Paper Denims.
I can't wait to start on my gorgeous shawl! I wonder if there are any yarn stores open on President's Day. My company doesn't consider recognizing the presidents a good enough reason to pay us for sleeping in, so I'm at work today. Why shouldn't everyone else be? :P
