“I’m telling you, I saw him.”
“Impossible. The whole bag disappeared, remember?”
“Doesn’t necessarily mean that the bag went into the garbage disposal.”
All anyone could hear in the warehouse for the next full minute was the sound of breathing as the information sank in.
One of the hooded figures gathered there suddenly turned to another.
“I’m so glad we didn’t send you. You breathe so loudly.”
“I’m sorry. I can’t help it.”
“Right people. Back to the business at hand. What shall we do next?” The shortest figure spoke out loudly, cutting off the previous speaker.
A tall, thin figure put his hand up, thin lips stretched out into a smile.
“I have an idea.”

Rounding the corner of a shelf in the pet store, Naoki almost bumped into another customer. Flustered apologies soon made way for mild surprise as both parties realized who the other was.
“Oh hello, I didn’t expect to see you here.”
“It’s alright. I wouldn’t have seen myself here either,” Shokichi gave his senior a wry grin as he adjusted the grip on the bag on his shoulder.
Naoki raised a brow when a cat’s head popped out from the bag, its owner seemingly curious as to what the commotion was all about.
It was the most beautiful maine coon that Naoki had ever seen.
“She’s very pretty.”
“It’s a ‘he’, actually.”
“Oh, so sorry about that. What’s his name? And wasn’t your family against keeping pets?”
“I haven’t given him a name yet. I haven’t exactly told them about this little guy yet either, but I’ll manage to convince them. Somehow,” Shokichi rubbed the back of his head sheepishly.
“I see. All the best to you then,” Naoki scratched the silver tabby’s chin, feeling rather than hearing it purr. A frown creased his forehead.
“He’s a little on the thin side, isn’t he?”
“Yeah, he is. I only brought him home yesterday evening. He was trapped in that construction site along Third Street. Haven’t exactly had the chance to fatten him up yet.”
“I’m sure that after you do, he’ll help to attract the ladies.”
“That’s good news for Masayasu and myself then, I suppose.” The two men shared a laugh.
Shokichi started when he glanced at his wristwatch.
“Naoki-san, I’m afraid that I have to run. I’ve got an appointment with Matsu-san soon, and I don’t want to be late.”
After bidding the other farewell, Naoki moved into the next aisle, only to find himself face-to-face with a scowling Naoto.

“... and just how many of you are there in this town?”
“Look, I could say the same to you. I just saw Mandy in the park a few days back-”
“We go where we please!”
“That is the same thing with us as well-”
“Guys, what is it this time?” Naoki could not remember the last time he had not been greeted with an ongoing argument upon stepping through his front door.
“Your friend’s cat. He’s a ‘shifter too.” Naoto rounded onto Naoki with an accusing glare.
“And Fluffycakes here has his panties all in a bunch, just because another of us decided to show up here. What is that, by the way? It smells really good.” Tetsuya was hungrily eyeing the styrofoam box that Naoki was holding.
“A shifter? Do you know him?” Naoki set the box on the kitchen counter.
“Ah he’s no bother. A little annoying sometimes, but he doesn’t mean anyone harm. Most of the time, anyway. So, what’s in the box?” Tetsuya’s eyes never moved away from said container.
“I have no clue. I found it near the mailbox at the gate. Did you see anyone drop it off?”
“Nope. Your rug is extremely comfortable. Well, what are you waiting for? Open it.”
“You don’t even know what’s in that box!” Naoto interjected.
“If it was a bomb it wouldn’t smell this good, alright.”
“And curiosity killed the cat.”
“You’re particularly snappish today. What’s the matter, feeling unloved? I could fix that...” Tetsuya openly leered at the shorter man.
“Shut it.”
“What on earth…” The two ‘shifters looked over at Naoki, who, in turn, was staring bewilderedly into the now-open box.
Said box contained three freshly caught fish, neatly placed on a bed of ice.

As the three members of Naoki’s household tucked into their dinner (Tetsuya dug in with particular gusto. After all, it was fish.), Naoto could not resist.
“Just a suggestion, but ‘Takanyan’ would be a nice name for your friend’s cat.”
