Perspective, that's why.
To preface this, I am not in the Harry Potter fandom. I have not read the fanfic. Hell, I haven't even read some of the books. I don't have a favorite pairing, nor do I care to acquire one. And yet I must tip my hat to Rowling, who has discovered the true secret to fame, which appears to be her ability to incite normal, average people to completely lose their minds.
I was flipping idly through the memories of Fandom Wank, amused at the number of entries for certain things. American Idol? 33 entries, mostly about Clay Aiken. This indicates to me that one way to measure fame is to gauge the level of crazy it induces on the internet. As further evidence, I submit Harry Potter: 440 entries. Compared to this, LoTR is a paltry 127. Star Wars, Stargate, and Star Trek combined barely top 50. (Sad, SciFi fandoms. Weak. I'm disappointed in your lack of batshit insane.)
And, for further evidence,
this entry, which proves to me that no matter how weird, neurotic, and stupidly emo I was as a teenager, there is a level of crazy which I can never hope to reach. Seriously, if you've ever felt even slightly unstable, read this. Perspective by the truck load.
