The Music@Menlo festival has begun, and will be occupying a fair bit of my time for three weeks. More then the Republican convention, that's for sure. I've already attended one concert, review to appear later, and today ventured onto the festival's Menlo School hq - this year under construction, the lawns all torn up, the parking lots taken over ( Read more... )

I'd say the latter. Some years ago I encountered "In the room the women come and go,/Talking of that teenage ninja turtle, oh." It was funny, and it was only funny because I got the reference, so obviously the hearers were meant to get the reference.

Besides, allusions to lines from earlier works are so frequent in Eliot that alluding to him is also a second order of alluding to him.
