Translated from acronyms: oh my freaking god, no child left behind act makes me all piss and vinegar.
I'm ranting and raving now. I drove home doing like 90 miles an hour.
K. This was the topic of discussion in my LAST class for my social foundations class. No Child Left Behind... sounds so sweet... right? What a stupid act.
The Bush Administration and I have parted ways. In fact, I believe I parted ways with the Republican party about a year or so ago.
1. The war in Iraq is costing this country 2 billion dollars a day. No biggie. I sort of kind of agree with the overthrow of Sadaam Hussien and I also believe that we need to stay there until the government is stable.
2. Ok. That was just a random fact, and I want everyone to think about what we can do with 2 billion dollars a day to fund the education of children around here.
3. The act *requires* schools to have an average yearly progress of 10% improvement every year. In other words, if your school CONSISTENTLY performs at 80 or 90% on standardized testing, you must increase the average scores of ALL your students *10%* each year. This goal is UNATTAINABLE. It makes me all piss and vinegar. because, see, the actions to keep this plan in action with our the average yearly progress involves FIRING THE ENTIRE STAFF of a school.
4. The act makes no provisions for the home lives of the students, the area of the school, and takes away from the ability of a teacher to provoke curiousity and intrinsic motivation. It pushes accountability from the hands of the students and parents and completely onto the back of the teacher. Because, you know, if the student can't pass the damn test, it has nothing to do with the fact that they've missed 85 days of school and has everything to do with the fact that the teacher obviously just could not teach.
WTF, W? Personal responsibility. Who needs it?
Oh, and my favorite part right now: The Secretary of Education called the NEA terrorists for denouncing NCLB.
