I have a problem.

I need your help.

It is very hard for me to give up on a book. To put it down, "abandon" it. I have to be having a pretty strong reaction to it. Even then it's pretty hard, but I've gotten better. By which I mean that I've done it three times in the last two years (over the course of 140 books I did read).

For April 2013, one of my book clubs selected The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. It's 642 pages. I whined once before about being assigned a long book (The Magus) for a book club, and I chided myself by reminding myself that this was shorter than some of the Twilight books. For what it's worth, I abandoned The Magus after 262 pages (about 33%) and a bad book club meeting.

I'm about 25% through The Historian. I had some library woes (trying to get the audiobook), and it took me a long time to get started (I had to renew it twice before I even cracked it open). Since it's for my facebook book club, there's no rush to finish; the discussion will be there for me to join any time. People who've read it have loved it.

Like I said, I usually abandon a book because I hate it. I don't dislike The Historian, but I'm not hooked, either. It's getting a little more interesting, but it's slow reading. If I put it down now, I probably won't ever come back to it. I have other things I want to read. I'm behind on some of my annual goals (partly because I got sucked into the Vampire Academy books), and that's making me twitchy. The nice thing about a large online book club is that no one will notice or care if I don't read it. In fact, there are only 3 people in the discussion (almost a month after the discussion was created), and only one person has posted.

This is where you guys come in. Help me convince myself to abandon this. I have no commitment to anyone, no reason to pursue this, except for my own compulsiveness.

Or, if you've read The Historian and loved it, let me know if I should keep going.
