2011 Movies, TV, and Books (April - June)

Jul 02, 2011 01:47

In chronological order. As always, * means I've seen it before, bold means I can't believe I haven't.
    April
  1. Delirious (2006)
  2. The Jane Austen Book Club (I suspect this is better as a book. However, I'd probably feel somewhat compelled to read Austen's books - a daunting task - and then The Mysteries of Udolpho for reference for Northanger Abbey. Since Grigg did it... Anyway, the whole project sounds overwhelming, so I'll stick to the movie. I have enough books waiting to be read.)
  3. It Might Get Loud (Starts with Jack White making a guitar from found objects. Nice!)
  4. That Hamilton Woman
  5. Code Monkeys, Season 1
  6. Blacula (With Jerry, of course.)
  7. The Thing with Two Heads (aka The Man with Two Heads or The Beast with Two Heads)
  8. Ransom
  9. The Good Student (I'm so confused! I have no idea what I'm supposed to have taken away from this experience.)
  10. The Cake Eaters
  11. Catfish
  12. Reefer Madness (2005, the musical)
  13. Prom Wars
  14. How About You
  15. Red Doors
  16. Cartoon Noir
  17. Sharkboy and Lavagirl
  18. Novocaine
  19. Emma* (1996)
  20. In & Out (Why was I totally surprised by how this plot went? I love being surprised by a comedy!)
  21. Rat
  22. The Ten
  23. Kevin Smith: Too Fat for 40
  24. Better Off Dead*
  25. I Am Number Four
  26. On the Edge (I thought this was really well done. Cillian Murphy definitely has a niche in my head.)
  27. Raising Victor Vargas (It seemed like something I was supposed to see, so I did. It seemed very real and uncomfortable, so I think it falls into the category of "it was good, but I didn't like/enjoy it.")
  28. Christine (1983)
  29. My Name is Bruce
  30. Hachi: A Dog's Tale (Cried. Like. A. Baby.)
  31. Stealing Home
  32. Red Riding Hood (2011) (I wanted to see it because I thought it would be pretty. It was.)
  33. It's Kind of a Funny Story (This wasn't as upsetting as I expected. I found the psych hospital's visiting policies implausible, and I was annoyed by the doctor who butchered the Serenity prayer. Ah well.)

April highlights: Rat, I Am Number Four, On the Edge, Hachi

    May
  34. My Effortless Brilliance (I pretty much hated this. Only laziness kept me watching through the end.)
  35. Wild Guitar
  36. The Sound of Music*
  37. Pride & Prejudice* (2005) (Yup, I still watch it every time it's on. I should probably read the book at some point. Perhaps before reading Pride & Prejudice & Zombies.)
  38. Girl, Interrupted (Very well done in some ways. How have I not seen this before?)
  39. Magical Mystery Tour (This probably would've been better if a) I was high and b) the quality of the recording was better. Ah well.)
  40. Bridesmaids (2011) (So much fun, but I wanted more Clemmie!)
  41. Frankie and Johnny (1966)
  42. The Tao of Steve
  43. All That Heaven Allows
  44. Sucker Punch
  45. 2007 Academy Award Nominated Short Films
  46. The Guild, Seasons 3* and 4
  47. The Towering Inferno (Couldn't help but think of 9/11 as I watched this. It's creepy to watch stuff like that now.)
  48. Beautiful Girls (I've been seeing bits and pieces of this for ages. It was time to just sit down and watch it.)
  49. The Sweet Hereafter (Wiki notes that the author said the movie was better than the book, but I don't believe it. But I'm not prepared to read the book to find out, so I'll just stick with some unresolved doubt.)
  50. Desk Set
  51. Brief Interviews with Hideous Men
  52. Weirdsville
  53. Code Monkeys, Season 2
  54. The Tingler
  55. The Fly (1958)
  56. There's No Business Like Show Business
  57. Ira and Abby
  58. The Man with the Screaming Brain
  59. Bart Got a Room
  60. A French Gigolo (or Cliente)
  61. Diggers (Mmmm, Paul Rudd...)
  62. Noise (2007)
  63. En la cama

May highlights: The Guild and Code Monkeys, Noise, The Tingler. I've been enjoying the old horror/thriller movies, but Vincent Price always makes me think of Thriller.

    June
  64. Teeth (So awesome, but SO DISGUSTING!!! I was initially surprised to see this listed as a "thriller," but it definitely made me cringe and flinch.)
  65. Toe to Toe
  66. When in Rome (2010)
  67. Vampires Suck
  68. Get Him to the Greek
  69. How to Train Your Dragon
  70. Green Lantern
  71. The Pillars of the Earth
  72. Pickpocket
  73. Meet Me in St. Louis
  74. Colin Fitz Lives!
  75. Barbe Bleue (2009) (Unsettling lack of closure for one of the storylines. Argh!)
  76. Virgin Territory
  77. Transformers (2007)*
  78. Princess Warrior (Netflix has never heard of this one -- and that should tell you something.)
  79. The Air I Breathe
  80. Gigantic
  81. Barton Fink (It's possible I've seen this before, in college days, but I don't remember it, so it doesn't count.)
  82. Kill Your Darlings
  83. The Go-Getter (Always love Zooey.)
  84. On the Doll (This is seriously one fucked up movie.)
  85. Monsoon Wedding
  86. My Dog Skip
  87. Woman on Top
  88. The Omen (1976) (It's weird to watch a classic when I've seen so many parodies of it. I kept picturing John Belushi & Buck Henry's parody on SNL.)

June highlights: Teeth maybe? Vampires Suck was definitely fun, Gigantic (mostly because of Zooey), The Go-Getter
    Books...
  1. The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury
  2. Florence of Arabia by Christopher Buckley
  3. Cleopatra's Daughter by Michelle Moran (I made the mistake of letting this be the only book I had on me during 12 hours on trains. It was fine, but it wasn't terribly engaging and I wasn't impressed. Among its many issues: While Cleopatra is spelled with a C in the title, it is consistently spelled with a K throughout the text.)
  4. Dirty Sexy Politics by Meghan McCain
  5. Hairstyles of the Damned by Joe Meno (This had a lot of run-on sentences and I kept finding myself running out of breath as I read even though I was only reading in my head, and even though I noticed I was doing that I couldn't make myself stop and that was pretty funny. The thing is, I think the sentences were technically grammatically correct, so I don't know if they'd actually qualify as "run-on" sentences, but it felt like they were.)
  6. Book of Shadows by Cate Tiernan (Sweep, book 1) (Read in one evening. It reminds me a lot of Twilight, and at first I thought, "If I wanted to read Twilight, I should just read Twilight." And then I realized that Twilight sort of bores me now, because I know the books backwards and forwards and I don't know if they hold anything new for me anymore. This was new, and quick, and I enjoyed it - but it wasn't good enough to spend more time on.)
