stuff n' things (can you tell I should be dissertating edition?)

First of all, faris_nallaneen linked me to Ben Franklin's synonyms for drunk. What's your favorite? I'm torn between "It is Star-light with him," and "Seen a Flock of Moons," (how celestial!) and "Been at an Indian Feast" (um, not the ones I've been to...), and... "Sir Richard has taken off his Considering Cap." SO BEEN THERE. Or there is a certain succinct ( Read more... )

Thanks for that link! I can't imagine what would make Jedi watchable to me (Luke's seduction by the Emperor aside), but these definitely look encouraging.

Ah, well. Jedi was my very first Star Wars film -- I suppose one could count Empire, but since I was in the womb at the time, I don't -- and I have always loved it. Including the Ewoks. I kinda wish I could have watched Empire once NOT knowing that Anakin Skywalker = Darth Vader = Luke's Father, but "I've always known."

Well, I'm probably also biased, as I love Empire so very, very much.

I think everyone agrees that Empire is, objectively, the best one.

I'd say it depends what your criteria are for "best" -- I've always felt that A New Hope is the best single movie because it works so well AS a single movie, while Empire is very much the "middle bit." Also I quite like my action-adventure movies to be a bit uplifting and end on a more triumphal note rather than Empire's gradual slide into awfulness (characters' circumstances) which is only helped by the knowledge that there's going to be another film's worth of opportunity for them to turn things around. New Hope sets up the universe without relying on any existing familiarity with the characters, puts them in peril, has the Rebels' backs put right up against the wall then shows them overcome the odds in a sufficiently satisfying conclusion that makes you WANT to see more but doesn't fundamentally require it of story closure.

Having said all this, just because I think New Hope is the best single Star Wars movie doesn't mean it's my personal favourite.

That'd be Jedi...

Well, as you know, Jedi is totally my first love! But you make good points, and remind me of the quintessential internet fandom truism: there is nothing in fandom that everyone can agree on. It's a corollary to the "if you can think of it, there's porn involving it on the internet." *grins*

Hey I hear you're crossing the pond sometime soon! Can't wait to catch up!
