& i'm considering TBB myself, actually. here is my list.
cons: - deadlines! stress! - detracting time from current fic/fandom projects. - i'm awful at writing to prompts. - the comm & provided info is really counterintuitive and hard to navigate.
pros: - getting more fandom exposure, higher review count. - making people happy with fic. - challenging myself, trying new things. - pretty art!
Yes. Although... I don't think you have to write to a prompt unless you want to? At least that's been the way in all big-bangs I've seen before. But you are right. Rather counterintuitive.
PRETTY ART. OR VIDS. MMMMMMMM.
Also, I would love to read it, if you did. =D
I tried a big-bang before, but failed. But! I am wiser more experienced now! And I had this whole Pete's World story planned. With cons and grift and SPACESHIPS. And spacepirate!mortal!Jack. *ponders*
What might you do if you did?
Ack. In my brain that was actually English. Except not.
I've been plotting out a bit of a Torchwood epic recently, which I basically want to get written before Season 3 comes out and I'm Jossed. Mostly to do with my thoughts on the mysterious Torchwood Four and sentient shopping trolleys and Ianto's family and the card-reading little girl and a lot of negligibly canon bollocks from the Torchwood Files. And John Hart. I really like writing John Hart.
We should both do it, and flail at each other! They seem to be very open & accepting about people who try and fail miserably, which is something I always like to see in Fest co-ordinators.
Sentient shopping trolleys! Card reading girl! I am desperately afraid that they will either a) forget all about her or b) get back to her and fuck it up. Your fic will be the answer to prayer. Ditto John Hart. I ♥ him. He's gonna be in mine too.
You know what is weird in TW verse? Magic! In Who, there is no magic. It is all "science". In TW, the supernatural exists. Is that just because a higher life form isn't around to explain it? D'you think if the Doctor came round to call, he'd be all, "Oh, you call those faeries, but actually they're aliens!" The thing is, they could be explained. But immortal card-reading girl? I can't think of a super good science-y explanation.
I know exactly what you mean! Sometimes it's a little facepalm-inducing, like the "lupine wavelength haemovariform" running around being all An Alien Werewolf In London in S2 Who. I suppose it's like the bees and the sentient darkness and all that; there are aliens on Earth who have become practically natives, in one way or another, and end up winding themselves into our mythology
( ... )
lol. It's true. The Doctor is totally the ultimate Mary Sue. He appears and is all like, "but let me tell you what's really going on because no matter who you are, I will always be smarter than you." Somehow it works? It is mystifyingly mesmerizing to me.
But the cards themselves? Are they thought-sensitive? Like some fucked up version of psychic paper? And that's why Jack sees his face on 'em?
TWO BY TWO HANDS OF BLUE. Seriously, that's awesome. *shivers*
Hahaha. I have yet to read fic about Hart where I am sold. It is very, very sad. He is (sorta) why I started watching the show in the first place. I mean, I'm sure I would've got round to it eventually but my bf emailed me a pic of the kiss from KKBB and was like, "OMG! Spike! Kissing this dude! Why aren't we watching this?" and then we were all like, well but we should watch from the beginning... and then started with s1 of newWho.
that's exactly how i got into Torchwood. "gay Spike kisses? I'm there." though i watched everything out of order - my first episode was Greeks Bearing Gifts and I only watched the NewWho which pertained to Torchwood at first.
my favourite Hartfic of all time is two drabbletty pieces by a friend of mine ( here and here) and while Jack is the character I feel most confident and comfortable writing I think Hart might be my favourite, thus the devouring of anything, anything with him in.
my favourite thing about the Doctor is that combination of total omnipotence and total vulnerability, which is why Ninth has a special place in my heart, because he embodied that juxtaposition so damn well.
psychic paper! oh, that's a wonderful idea, and i may just have to steal it. *grins*
I love Nine (you never forget your first Doctor!) but the thing I like best about the Doctor is (also a juxtaposition) the way he has this larky, happy-go-lucky exterior, but underneath is all I AM THE APPROACHING STORM, BITCHES. And when it slips, it is so very alarming. I find Ten far darker than Nine because of the greater contrast. I thought Nine wore his darkness more on the surface, which creeped me out significantly less.
My first doctor was Three back when I was an undergrad, and I find myself wanting to binge on the dvds from classic DW and really watch the progression of the character. One thing I do like about the Nine/Ten era is the darkness within the character is emphasized.
I've been feeling that way about classic who now too, although the Doctor is completely new to me! And I tried watching classic as methadone when i was waiting for series 3 to come in on netflix, and it just Did Not Work. But after having watched all the new who there is, I'd finding Classic much more fascinating!
Think about it. There are 45 years of a character, ten different interpretations by writers and actors. That's amazing. That doesn't happen on television for any other series.
And as an audience member, once one has witnessed a few regenerations, there's the anticipation of "where will they take the character next?"
