More on Amazon's epic fail. It's all over the news outlets and blogsphere, and I'm still sitting here stunned at Amazon's stupidity.
I found that graphic over on
ontd_political. Please feel free to take and repost.
First, a few links describing what happened. Amazon decided within the last few days (still trying to find out exactly when) to remove all LGBT and erotica from its rankings. Thus far I haven't found an exhaustive list of what they've removed, and I suspect there won't be one, because it's apparently still evolving as Amazon pulls more books.
Jezebel.com's post. The post from ontd_political.
The Los Angeles Times piece. Dear Author's article. A very informative post over on
meta_writer.
Craig Seymour's been reporting on Amazon's homophobia for a while. Here's the message that Amazon sent to someone querying about what happened:
In consideration of our entire customer base, we exclude "adult" material from appearing in some searches and best seller lists. Since these lists are generated using sales ranks, adult materials must also be excluded from that feature.
Hence, if you have further questions, kindly write back to us.
Best regards,

Amazon.com Advantage
Lest you think that this doesn't matter to you or that it'll only affect a small portion of literature, THEY REMOVED JAMES BALDWIN AND JEANETTE WINTERSON's books from their rankings. James Baldwin. Sit and contemplate that for a few moments and realize how atrociously bigoted that is. You want history books about the role of LGBT people in history? Biographies? Young adult books that may mention LGBT people or have them as characters? Well, you're shit out of luck, people. Self-help books? College guides for LGBT people looking for LGBT-friendly colleges? Books for straight people wanting to support LGBT friends or family as they come out? Parenting books? Nope. You're SOL.
The fact is that this move by Amazon can negatively impact the sales of any author that is on their hit list. Do you really want Amazon to lessen the possibility that someone who hasn't read James Baldwin might stumble across his work on Amazon, order his books, and proceed to read one of the most exquisite writing talents in all of American history? If so, get off my flist and don't let the door hit you on the way out.
If you go to Amazon right now and search "homosexuality," the top books you find are all about preventing, "healing," and attacking homosexuality. Here's what I found when I did the search at 7:50 AM PDT:
That means if you go on Amazon and search for books that are listed under the key word of "homosexuality," you won't find the plethora of books that are written by LGBT authors unless you already know their names. Think of what that means for someone just coming to terms with their gayness and/or anyone wanting to find new books by GLBT authors.
This is taken directly
from the list that
vashtan's posted on
meta_writer. It compiles thus far a list of books that have been found to have been removed from Amazon's rankings. All credit goes to the people who compiled this list:

None of which can be called "erotica" by any stretch of the imagination.

Alex Beecroft: False Colours, m/m historical romance, just broken through and ranking in top 10 historical novels-- i.e. non-romance, non-gay-- and then it suddenly disappeared entirely from the rankings. Apparently even autobiographies about being trans constitute "adult material".

Amazon.de has indiscriminately (hah!) removed the rankings from any and all books listed as glbt in English Books (and only in English books; the German ones are still displayed with their rankings). Funnily enough, of the three different (English) editions of Michael Chabon's The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, only one is categorised as glbt; subsequently, the other two are still listed with their rankings while the "gay" one has been filtered. Further, Amazon.de claims this is a technical glitch.

Regarding amazon.co.jp: "Tried searching for a dozen or so books from the above list of various types, and in almost every case, the search page had the cover image replaced with a graphic indicating it was an adult item. If you click through you can see the actual cover art, but there is a note that it is an adult work. On the Japanese language version of the page, it says that adult materials will not be sold to anyone under 18. In both English and Japanese it says that the item cannot be shipped outside Japan."
A search for Kushiel's Scion reveals that the version published by Warner is an adult item.

If you want to contact Amazon directly to protest and register your discontent with this decision that silences, and purges so many writers and books from Amazon's website, here is how you can contact them, and I strongly urge you to do this whether you be straighter than straight, LGBT, or someone that doesn't fall into any of those categories:
E-mail addresses:
connect-help@amazon.com
Other ways to get in touch with them:
http://clicheideas.com/amazon.htm This information is publicly available on Amazon's website. This is not Mr. Bezos' private contact information.
Better yet, contact Jeffrey Bezos, who happens to be Amazon's CEO:
Jeffrey Bezos
1200 12th Avenue South
Seattle
Washington 98144-2734
United States
Phone: 206-266-1000
Fax: 206-622-2405
I'll be sending Mr. Bezos a fax, a letter via certified mail, AND an e-mail today.
There's also an online petition, but I have a feeling that Amazon doesn't give a damn about online petitions.
There are more than a few people on LJ who work on Amazon. I have to wonder how they feel about this and what they're doing. Personally, if I worked for Amazon, I'd be quitting right about now in protest.
Edits:
1.
syringavulgaris reports that Amazon is claiming that this is all a "glitch." I've yet to see any links that confirm that reliably.
2. Over on
brutal_honesty there's someone claiming that he/she is partially or wholly responsible for spamming Amazon with complaints about the above described content. I'm not linking to it because I suspect that the links in his post might take you to malware sites.
