Well... A year ago I put up a post on Valintine's Day, and today I'd like to return to the idea that Valintine's Day is an unnecessary holiday.
So, first off, Valintine's Day is based on the idea of Gender Inequality (due to societal situations, at the very least). For instance, consider the following set of options:
Female, single: If she's looking for someone, then yes, today stinks. Otherwise, she is unaffected.
Female, attached: In this case, Valintines only stinks if her boyfriend doesn't do anything. If he does, then although she may be happy, it was still expected. NOTE: In either case, there isn't anything she needs or is expected to do.
Male, single: If he's happy being single (which I think is much more likely then not) he doesn't care. If he's unhappy... well he's probably got other problems and being single on Valintine's day doesn't really bother him as much as it would a single female.
Male, attached: He is expected to do all the legwork of making Valintine's a special day for the two. Any failure upon his part gets him in trouble, and as such is a bad thing. Note that preperations for this day are not necessarily cheap (in Time or Money).
Another thing: If Valintine's day is supposed to be used as a measure of someone's affection it can only disappoint. Why? Because even if the couple has a good time, it's expected. If something bad happens, well, then it still has the negative reaction.
I might add more later...
