it's about this guy who knows this courtesan and at her death, there is an auction and he buys a book. a little later a guy hunts him down and asks to buy the book. the guy turns out to be courtesan's lover and he's distraught over her death. the asshole had basically fallen in love with her and her with him and then went along their happy little way until daddy started getting suspicious because of strange rumors, funny things with cash. dad tries to get son to leave courtesan. he refuses. dad appeals to courtesan and she dumps guy. guy gets pissed and sleeps with all the courtesan's friends. he insults her. he sleeps with courtesan and she confesses her love for him and he gives her a check for her services. she returns the check and he runs off to play in alexandria. courtesan dies of consumption. guy is victim. let's pity him.
in other words, lame. stupid men.
