Blow out

Jan 30, 2009 14:38

I literally almost shat my pants this afternoon. Yup. Almost. The blow out horn sounded, and I looked up to see a mountain of drill mud etc arupting overtop of the rig. The one day that I don't wear my coveralls and contacts all day due to feeling really sick, and the horn goes off. Once I saw that they were only scrambling to control it, I whipped back in threw on my contacts and coveralls and waited til they were all assembled then went to check them out. One has ingested and likely inhaled invert (a diesel drill mud) as well as gotten it all over himself and in his eyes, and the others got it all over themselves and in their eyes. I made them rinse out their eyes, and checked with poison control as there's no MSDS (idiots!) on site. I checked it online and recommended to the one, say patient A, that he get checked by a doctor immediately. He had a shower, which helps, but wow. Not a good day. Getting really scared about living on site. Going to be happy once this particular hole is done as this apparently doesn't happen often at all. We're right in the area where that one rig burned to the ground last Christmas too, when tehy couldn't control their blowout. Eep! I hate sleeping with my eyes wide shut. :(
