I have actually gotten hooked on a TV show -- Grease: You're The One That I Want -- to the point of going over to my mom's last night in the snowy drizzle to watch it since I have no reception at home (I stumbled on it while out in California). This is a very strange concept for me, since with everything else I'm really interested in I will patiently wait for the DVD boxsets and have never been interested in a reality-type show before. Though when I told Claudine about it, she just shrugged and said, "Of course you are. It's a musical."
...
Okay, so I'm predictable. I love musicals. And I've been wanting to put together this meme for a while now, in line with other name-that-song memes but focused entirely on musicals.
I'm after musical title and song title if you know both (and hey, if you know the character/singer, woo!), but am very loose with the song titles if you can place the rest or describe surrounding bits that indicate you know it. :> Hey, it's what I do half the time myself. Some of these are from movie musicals, others are stage ones. The lyrics do sometimes change, so I've indicated where I've taken it from. None of these are one-liners, btw. I think that's a little too much to ask, and besides, it's easier to get songs stuck in your head this way. ;-)
[EDIT] Only one left, and I admit it's the one I wasn't sure anyone would get. Woo! on people getting so many so fast, though - I'm never sure if my tastes will match up, though with a few exceptions I went for musicals I thought people might know. :> Hint given for the remaining one...
1 -- (stage revival)
Were you getting yourself a little moody cause some folks are downright mean
Oh me oh my, ain't that a shame
Were you starting to make a little speech about the troubles that you've seen
Please spare me that, such a pity game
Who said life was a bowl of berries, who said life was peach ice cream
Who said life was a box of cherries - Not me! Not me.
So ask me no questions, give me no answers, and I'll sell you no dreams
HINTS FOR #1 -- Ann-Margret is the main character for the stage revival, but Dolly Parton is more known for the role from the movie (but I haven't seen the movie, so I don't know if the lyrics are the same... actually, looks like this song isn't even in the movie, or at least not on the soundtrack). Main character sings in this song, but not this particular verse.
2 -- Bye Bye Birdie, "I've Got a Lot of Living To Do", Kim (movie) --
flyingwolfThere are men... with childhood behind them
Handsome men... from Yale or Perdue
Older men... and I'm gonna find 'em!
I got a lot of living to do...
I-I-I-I'm gonna have fun, gonna be wild!
Have my own way
I may break... a heart a day
Drink champagne... as if it were water
Pink champagne... and after a few
Daddy dear... you won't know your daughter!
She's got a lot of living to do!
3 -- Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, "Any Dream Will Do", Narrator (stage revival) --
maevethSome folks dream of the wonder they'll do
Before their time on this planet is through
Some just don't have anything planned
They hide their hopes and their heads in the sand
Now I don't say who is wrong who is right
But if by chance you are here for the night
Then all I need is an hour or two
To tell the tale of a dreamer like you
4 -- Rent, "Take Me or Leave Me", Joanne (stage) --
nyreakI look before I leap, I love margins and discipline
I make lists in my sleep, baby, what's my sin?
Never quit, I follow through
I hate mess but I love you
What to do with my impromptu baby?
5 -- Little Shop of Horrors, "Feed Me (Git It)", Audrey II & Seymour (stage) --
maevethThink about a room at the Ritz
Wrapped in velvet, covered in glitz
A little nookie's gonna clean up your zits!
And you'll get it.
Gee I'd like a Harley machine
Tooling around like I was James Dean
Making all the guys on the corner turn green
So go get it.
6 -- Annie, "Let's Go to the Movies", Grace (movie) --
jenn2d2Bette Davis is probably lying
and Greta Garbo is probably crying
while Robert Taylor is locked in her dying embrace
Chico and Groucho and Chaplin and Lloyd are all super
Sweet Mickey Mouse, Shirley Temple, and dear Jackie Cooper
7 -- Guys and Dolls, "Luck Be a Lady", Sky Masterson (stage) --
maevethThey call you Lady Luck, but there is room for doubt
At times you have a very unladylike way of running out
You're on a date with me, the pickings have been lush
And yet before this evening is over you might give me the brush
You might forget your manners, you might refuse to stay
And so the best that I can do.... is pray.
8 -- Grease, "There Are Worse Things I Could Do", Rizzo (both stage and movie) --
maevethI could hurt someone like me
Out of spite or jealousy
I don't steal and I don't lie
But I can feel and I can cry
A fact I bet you never knew
9 -- Oliver!, "I'd Do Anything", Oliver and Bett (stage revival) --
djwildstarWould you lace my shoe - anything
Paint your face bright blue - anything
Catch a kangaroo - anything
Go to Timbuktu - and back again
10 -- The Pirate, "Be a Clown", Manuela/Serafin aka Judy Garland/Gene Kelly (movie) --
sharpwordsShow 'em tricks! Tell 'em jokes!
And you'll only stump the tough folks
Dress in huge baggy pants and you'll ride the road to romance
A butcher or a baker ladies never embrace
A barber for a beau would be a social disgrace
They all'll come to call if you can fall on your face
Be a clown, be a clown, be a clown.
11 -- The Music Man, "The Sadder But Wiser Girl For Me", Professor Harold Hill (movie) --
nyreakNo bright-eyed, blushing, breathless baby-doll baby - no sir!
That kind of child ties knots no sailor ever knew
I prefer to take a chance on a more adult romance
No dewy young miss who keeps resisting all the time she keeps insisting
No wide-eyed wholesome innocent female - no sir!
Why she's the fisherman I'm the fish you see - plop!
12 -- The Bandwagon, "That's Entertainment!" (movie) --
kernowgirlIt might be a fight like you see on the screen
A swain getting slain for the love of a queen
Some great Shakespearean scene
Where a ghost and a prince meet
And everyone ends in mincemeat
The gang may be waving the flag
That began with a Mr. Cohan
Hip hooray, the American Way!
The world is a stage, the stage is a world of entertainment
13 -- My Fair Lady, "Show Me", Eliza (stage) --
sharpwordsNever do I ever want to hear another word
There isn't one I haven't heard
Here we are together in what ought to be a dream
Say one more word and I'll scream!
14 -- State Fair, "It Might As Well Be Spring", Margie (movie) --
maevethI'm as restless as a willow in a windstorm
I'm as jumpy as a puppet on a string
I'd say that I have spring fever
But I know it isn't spring
I'm starry-eyed and vaguely discontented
Like a nightingale without a song to sing
Oh why should I have spring fever
When it isn't even spring
15 -- The Pirates of Penzance, "How beautifully blue the sky" aka "Let's Talk About the Weather", General Stanley's daughters (stage) --
jenn2d2How beautifully blue the sky
The glass is rising very high
Continue fine I hope it may
And yet it rained but yesterday
Tomorrow it may pour again
I hear the country wants the rain
Yet people say I know not why
That we shall have a warm July
