Sleep:

8ish hours and groggy. Slept late sort of, was exhausted through brunch, and then came home to nap instead of continuing with post-brunch funtime adventures at the marina.

Wherein I ramble about cats and litter boxes... plantyhamchuk July 22 2012, 09:56:52 UTC
Oh litterbox issues, always so tricky. I'm sure you know these, but whenever they show up I find it helpful to try to run through something of a list - Does it need to be cleaned? Did I recently change the type of litter used? Has the litterbox been moved? Did I recently change kitty's diet, are they not going at all (medical emergency) or just finding somewhere else to go? Did they have an accident, and then later decide due to the odor that it's a great place to go? Has the litterbox been moved recently? Are recent stresses in the household? Have they been left alone more than usual (are they feeling abandoned ( ... )

I feel so sad for the kitty! I think I need to get more information from the roommate about his litter history because as long as he's been living here (since March) he's had litter box issues. Roommate was just using a flat open top box with ultra cheap litter and then rarely cleaned it. Kitty was obviously unhappy with the cleaning situation so I gave them a nice litter box that easier to clean. And that wasn't as smelly and obvious. Even with that roommate wasn't cleaning the box often enough for the cat, and I was sick of having cat shit all over the house, so we moved the litter box someplace where it would be more convenient for me to clean it. Gato seems to like his box cleaned about every two days, which isn't unreasonable considering that having a box full of old animal excrement sitting around the house is pretty gross anyway. I would happily clean the box for him every two days if he would use it. I need to figure out where/if he's urinating because it doesn't seem like he's doing that in the box either. I've been feeding ( ... )

One thing that can help if the cat is stressed or upset is a special cat pheromone, Feliway is the name of the product. This stuff is *really* not cheap, but can be invaluable. It comes in a variety of forms, I have the kind that plugs into a wall socket. I use it when moving or when cats are upset (like back from the vet post-op), or during a period of time when introducing cats. Some people use it all the time. How well it works depends on the individual cat, some seem to respond more than others. IME, it just sort of takes the 'edge' off of their tension, but for some people it has worked miracles (resolved litterbox issues). YMMV. It's a handy thing to keep around, if possible ( ... )

Well, moved the box back down where it used to be. I still haven't found any evidence of him toileting other places and roommate hasn't noticed anything unusual, so who knows. Thank you for all the advice! I'm more of a dog person so I have no clue about cats.
