Day 1

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Rec 1: And Never Been Kissed

The podfic that ate my life for many months (over a year! Spring 2015 to Summer 2016!), kept me going through a period of very dramatic change, including graduation, the break-up of a nearly-three-year relationship, a cross-country move, family drama, several jobs, and a new relationship. I still adore the story with every fiber of my being. I’m very happy with how it came out, I’m very happy with my stick-with-it-ness, I’m very happy that I decided right at the end that it needed to have music, I’m happy that I was working on it as they won the Stanley Cup. It means a lot to me as a story, it means a lot to me as a podfic, and I think that both those come through really well :D

Rec 2: Come Away to the Water

Oh man. I fell super hard for this story several years ago, and always had in the back of my head that it would be an amazing podfic. But I wanted to do justice to it, and asking for permission is hard, and I kept getting distracted by shinies. But one of my resolutions for 2016 was to be more conscious about the media that I produce and that I consume, and part of that meant resisting the urge to get distracted by white male shinies and instead work on this amazing, powerful, riveting, heart-wrenching story. It took me roughly five times as long to record and edit as my podfics usually do, in part because the writing is so powerful and so precise that I wanted to be sure I was giving the text the weight it deserves, and in part because I imposed technical challenges on myself that I do think made it a stronger podfic - no voices and physically “closer” interior voices - but that necessitated lots of extensive re-records. On top of that, it’s a very emotionally demanding and intense story, which both literally slowed down my recording - I spoke everything more slowly and had a lot more pauses - but also sometimes meant more frequent emotional breaks for me to move around and make myself tea and breathe for a few minutes. I’m very happy with how it came out, and I do like to think that I did justice to leobrat’s text, but wow, it was a lot. But I’d do it again in a heartbeat - podficcing it was an amazing experience in and of itself :D

I'm having trouble choosing a third one, because while I love many of the podfics I made this year, these two were really the stand-outs. So instead of angsting over it, I'll stop there.
