Netflix reviews

Just got an email about Netflix removing this feature due to declining usage. My reviews always complain about the same thing, it seems---pace, pace, pace.

Gerald's Game

This movie frightened me, rather than startle me for no reason. It drew me in, sometimes even using silence to great effect. Let that sink in, and then decide if you want to watch it. I wanted a horror film for adults, with a deep plot and good pace---I should've been careful what I wished for. This thing is amazing, but seriously, watch at your own peril.

Painfully slow and coy. Total waste of good actors, cameras, locations, lighting and breath, as the movie is full of unnecessary dialogue, slow scenes that are unrelated to the main plot, and requires the viewer to be "patient" and "wait" for something good to happen. Why this asinine approach, I wonder? Just, w-h-y?????

My Beautiful Broken Brain

It is absolutely awful, boring, disjointed, slow paced, uninteresting, dull and frustrating to watch. Good production values, though...

The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst

Just 3 stars because of the slow pace. The 2 last episodes are great, but the others are full of filler material, they really drag along, and it was hard to stay awake. Still worth a watch.

Death Row Stories

It's just OK. The first episode is the most compelling one; the others are slow and drawn out. They should have covered two cases in 45 minutes instead of dragging a single story and grasping at straws to make time. I like that there was a case with a different outcome than the expected "innocent" and that it tries to open people's eyes as to the legal system's shortcomings.

Each season has an absolutely dreary episode and two episodes that are amazing beyond words. The two good episodes in each season are fun, thrilling, captivating, and keep you interest throughout. Highly recommended.

I wanted to give it a two-star review but I wanted to be fair to the high production values and quality. The first 15-20 minutes are magnificent, well paced, and really hold your attention. And then it lags and repeats itself, drops cohesiveness, goes on unnecessary tangents, loses tautness... and so on and so forth until it finally ends unsatisfactorily.

Secrets of the Dead: Death on the Railroad

Very bad. Speculation, almost all of it. The most thorough process was that of pressing "record" on the camera and the most resources were spent on the editing, as none of it went to actually investigating, let alone reporting in a way that makes sense.

Count me out. This thing is over hyped. Things just don't happen fast enough to keep me interested. Ghosts and the like are revealed, then become fixtures---they're always around for no good reason and the soundtrack goes out of whack every time, even for things and faces you've already seen and that won't scare you. Sat through 8 painful eps the first season, and 3 slow ones in the 3rd season because new actors were being introduced. Didn't enjoy it at all.

The L.A. Complex

4 stars for the 1st season ONLY!! It is interesting, has good acting, is well paced, and entertaining. The 2nd season is a drawn-out, plot-driven mess, and just nonsensical. I was exasperated the whole time I was watching it, hoping it'd get better. It didn't.

2 out of 5. Another boring drama labeled as a thriller. Slow moving. It fails as a drama too, as character dev is just too shallow. Disliked it quite a lot.

Deadly Women
You rated this movie: 2
There is only so much "testimony" and atmospheric music one can stand before the show becomes exasperating and boring. That keeps the narration from actually moving forward and revealing info about how the crime was committed, discovered or solved. I don't dislike the show but it has so many talking heads for so long, in detriment of details uncovered during the investigation. And when they have neither a talking head who can speculate about a crime they didn't witness or have very little details about, we get endless close-ups and soundtrack, like in the case of the Australian woman. This series needs to be more taut and to the point!!!!!! Investigation Discovery has the terrible habit of dragging stories for a long time and squeezing more content out of them by having these pop experts make generalizations about the criminal's psyche, like in the case of the girl sniper. You could eliminate that almost completely, or at least reduce the "expert"'s air time. The medical examiner, however, is VERY interesting, as she explains the expected effects and traces of the weapons used, especially poison. I'd give it 2.5 stars, as it many times puts me to sleep.
