maki & meisa, sisters
(This is technically my third time trying this. Third time's a charm?)

Meisa is Maki's first friend, first confidant and first sister. They're not blood-related in the way that Meisa and Sho are which Maki envied when they were younger. There was a connection between them that was nonverbal and caring--gestures that were second nature, inside jokes that nobody knew the origin to, stories that always inadvertently brought the other into it because there was no Meisa without Sho, and no Sho without Meisa.

For a while, Maki entertains the idea that eventually she'll have her own sibling to connect with, someone to have her own jokes and stories with. Except she knows that the likelihood is slim when she's not entirely sure about her own parentage. So instead, she looks on in envy as Meisa and Sho or Satomi and Nari or Becky and Yuriko be siblings.

It's illogical, she knows, but she has so very few connections that it's one she wishes had been granted to her.

"It must be nice," Maki tells Meisa one afternoon after a lunch with her and Sho. Sho leaves not too long after the meal is served. Meisa snarks that it's because of the clean-up, but Sho rolls his eyes and, with a wave of his hand, makes the dishes disappear.

Meisa looks up from sharpening her arrowheads. "What is?"

"Having a brother. He's not obligated to come, but he does anyway because he loves you and cares to see you often."

"He comes a little too often," Meisa grumbles.

Maki laughs, lazily stirring her cup of tea. "I think you're complaining just to complain."

"It is nice," Meisa sighs, going back to her arrowheads. Her hair falls in front of her face, blocking Maki from seeing her expression. "But sometimes, he cares too much." Meisa's voice is soft with only a tinge of hurt. It's been years, centuries by this point probably, but Maki knows the wound is still there--like most of their wounds. Never fully healed and just waiting for someone to rip it open all over again.

"He'll always be sorry," Maki murmurs, reaching over. She's not sure if she wants to pat Meisa on the head or the back or what, but it doesn't matter because Meisa's head snaps up as Maki's hand is halfway between them.

"It doesn't matter," Meisa says icily. "He stuck his nose into business that wasn't his."

"He's your brother," Maki argues. "If your own brother doesn't have your back, then who does?"

"You do, for one!" Meisa sets her arrows aside, carefully despite her shaking hands.

"Of course I do." Maki reaches out again, tugging Meisa's hands into hers. Meisa lets her with a sigh.

"I love him, will always, but I'm not sure there'll ever be a part of me that won't be angry. He took away someone important to me, and through the cruelest of methods. And I can't really forgive that, Maki. Even for my brother."

Maki purses her lips. And this is why she's vowed never to fall in love. But she keeps quiet, sure that this isn't the comment that Meisa is looking for. Instead she shifts her chair, moving so that she can lean her head against Meisa's shoulder.

After a brief silence, Meisa says lightly, "The problem with having siblings sometimes is they know how to get you where it hurts, no matter how well-meaning they are."

Maki nods slowly before tilting over and kissing her on the cheek. "You still have me?"

Meisa laughs leaning her head against Maki's. "And you will always have me."

(P.S. Managed to write this right before my "movie"!!! :D)
