Kame was the very first to become a page - at the ripe age of seven, but since he was already the third/i> son, his parents wanted him to get an early start. He had even arrived there before Nakamaru and Ueda who were three years his senior. So even if he was the youngest, he was the one that watched as they all arrived, trained, became squires, then became knights. All before he ever could.

There wasn't resentment, not really.

Just frustration at his own age. But he never let it show.

He'd only been knighted for a day before Kame got a request from the King himself. At that time, he'd been sparring with Koki - another knight who'd only been knighted the year before; they'd gone through lessons for years together, friends that trusted their lives to each other.

Not only had Kame been asked, but as had Koki.

Upon arriving in the King's chambers where he spent most of his time working, Kame recognized all the others who had been called as well. Some as those he'd admired (He'd been assigned as Ueda's squire for four years, until Ueda became an actual knight, Taguchi had been one of his friends), some that he just didn't know as well (Nakamaru was just unknown to him, but Koki had been his squire for the same amount of years), and one that he just cross paths with in wrong ways.

Jin had caught sight of him as soon as he stepped into the room - never actually staring at Kame (especially since he was meant to focus on the King), but Kame could feel him trying to peek at him at the corners of his eyes.

Ever since Jin had been a page, he'd rubbed Kame the wrong way - always proud, always confident (not without reason, Kame thought unfortunately), plus his father was an important noble. So not only was he a good knight, but he had money.

He was also an asshole who thought only of himself.

"I'm sending you six out on a special mission," King Koichi told him, standing up on his chair and starting to pace from Ueda (who was at one end) to Kame (who was at the other) and then back. "Nobody is to know what your task is, nor the trouble I am going through to keep this under wraps."

Kame sucked in his breath. Chin up, back straight, hands firmly at his sides - suddenly feeling all his sweat go cold as he thought of obvious importance of his task.

"I am sending you all along with Princess Yamapi to King Johnny's territory," Koichi announced, moving back to his table. "You know that our relationship with them is shaky, at best, so insure that not one toe does not step out of line. I am sending the Princess there to help smooth things over. It's possible that King Johnny wants to marry his son with Yamapi in order to connect our kingdoms and if he does, I want to see it happen. Understood?"

"Yes, sir," six voices said in unison.

"Good. Be ready in the morning." Koichi took his seat again, his head immediately going back to the multitude of papers in front of him. Without releasing his breath, Kame made his way back out the doors, only inhaling once he'd gotten past them - the heavy wood doors shutting closed behind him.

"Ready for this, Kamenashi?" Jin asked pointedly, an eyebrows raised. "I don't know why King Koichi would choose such a newbie for this mission, but I want to be certain you're at least up for it."

Kame raised his chin just a touch. "More ready than you give me credit for, Akanishi. I have as much right to be here as you do."

"I never said you didn't." He turned on his heel, walking away as Taguchi followed behind, waving bye to Kame as he did so.

"Are you ready for this?" Koki asked beside him. "It'll be your first mission as a knight."

"A day after you were knighted too," Ueda snorted. "What opportune timing."

Kame's eyes flared. "I've trained longer than any of you. If we were talking right and status, I have more."

"Kamenashi, be quiet," Ueda snapped. Kame bit his tongue, suddenly feeling guilty for his outburst. "Nobody is questioning your right, but if you've been keeping count of how much better you are than the rest of us - maybe you need to rethink how you approach this mission." He turned around, turning into a hallway at their right before Kame could even think of saying anything to apologize - except not, because Kame, no, knights don't apologize.

Nakamaru clapped him on the back. "It'll be okay. I think Ueda's still surprised you were chosen for something so dangerous. He's more protective of you than you know." He gave Kame a small smile before heading in the same direction Ueda had.

"This is a good start," Koki laughed beside him. "We just got our mission and we already hate each other without even getting onto the road. Wonder if I can back out."

Kame gave him a dirty look, but Koki threw his arm around Kame's shoulders good-naturedly. "Calm down, Kame. You're letting your nerves get the best of you. You have nothing to prove, so just do your work."

Kame nodded slowly, then exhaled. He had a day to prepare.
