For years now I've wanted to try my hand at bookbinding.
Ideally I want to take texts from Project Gutenberg and lay them out on computer-make them look pretty and whatnot-then print them and bind them and sell them as art books.
I've made half hearted attempts to do this over the years but never completed them because I never knew what I would do once it came to the binding part.
Since I've started looking for a fountain pen, however, my interest has started to grow again. I found a forum called fountainpennetwork.com and there's a whole subsection devoted to paper and journals and whatnot. A few of the members are into making their own journals or buying handmade blank books for the purpose of journalling. In one of the posts I found a link to
a company that actually sells a couple kits that teach bookbinding.
I've been searching for as much information as I can in the past week or so about bookbinding and have found much more information on the net now compared to the last time I searched.
There's a website by a designer in Australia with a pretty nice tutorial on how to make a hardcover book. There is a series of videos on Youtube by a professional binder showing the process from start to finish-though video four is missing for some reason-and there are other videos on Youtube as well showing different levels of bookbinding from various people.
Well, I've thought about it and thought about it-and y'all know how guilty I feel after I spend any money-and I finally decided to order one of the bookbinding kits. I just know I'm going to get odd looks from the family but, oh well. This is something I've wanted to do for a while and if I can do it well I can turn it into a little side business...which I think my aunt Sue will love as she's been pestering me to start doing photography for art shows and whatnot so this will be something else I think she'll want to jump on.
So anyway, sometime within the next couple weeks expect pictures and commentary about my first foray into bookbinding.
