Raffles Place Once More

May 17, 2006 22:56

Walked with my mum down Raffles Place today. It was during my lunch break, and she had come down to settle some financial matters.

I had a sudden flashback of the few times back in the 80s, when my mom dabbled in shares, and she took me with her to Raffles Place to make her transactions. Back then, everybody had papers as proof of ownership - no electronic trading! I remember being awed at how tall the buildings were, and how serious and businesslike the people and atmosphere were.

Almost two decades later, I've become a denizen of Raffles Place. I'm the one guiding my mum as we weave our way around the skyscrapers, now much taller, just like me.

I let the wave of nostalgia wash over me. It was almost enjoyable, save for a bittersweet aftertaste. I'm waxing while she is waning. And though I'm enjoying the benefits of being an adult, I've not shouldered the accompanying responsibilities, or showered her with the love and attention that she deserves.

But things are never as simple as that.
