couldn't resist ordering collector's editions of these anime on amazon.com when they went on sale.
Robotech was a compelling cartoon to watch in the 80s, because it was one of the rare cartoons back then to have story arcs, instead of standalone episodes within which all misfortunes are neatly reversed or resolved.
1st Generation/Macross is suppposedly the favourite of many Robotech fans due to its "classic" love story, but that's exactly what I don't like about it - too draggy like a soap opera, albeit a space soap opera.
I like 3rd Gen the most because it's about a rag-tag band of freedom fighters fighting Invid (alien) invaders on Earth, from city to city and town to town, rather than against the emotionless backdrop of outer space.
There's also a lot more character development - entire episodes are dedicated to fleshing out the backgrounds of each and every character in the team, something not done in 1st & 2nd Gen.
