Part 1
Part 2
The sound of metal was something that Tabitha didn’t think she would ever get used to, but she didn’t really have to. According to everything she’d read the journey would only take a few weeks and then they’d be on Thear. She bit her lip as she thought about what it was going to be like on her new world, because they’d only been given limited information, which wasn’t enough for her to be able to know what it would be like there. One of the things she was looking forward to was the snow. Living on the south coast of England meant she didn’t see much of it and when she did everything had a terrible habit of coming to a standstill due to lack of preparation. Hopefully things wouldn’t be the same there.
Both of her new companions followed her, obviously also looking for their rooms. Tabitha, as much as she was looking forward to getting to Thear, hadn’t been looking forward to the journey. Even though they were only rumours they’d all heard about ships that had crashed during testing. Now that they were sending people out in them they said they were fixed, but their word was no guarantee, so she couldn’t help worrying that she might end up being in one of the ships that crashed. She glanced over her shoulder at the two still nameless boys, wondering what they were thinking about as they stared at the doors they were walking past.
She was in room number 86. It looked like the creators of the ships had put evens on one side and odds on the other, so that made things simpler than they would have been otherwise, and Tabitha knew she was going to be quite far round. There was probably another door she could have used on the other side of the communal area, but she just wanted to be away from all the noise. Although she wouldn’t call herself a loner she wasn’t good around large groups of people. During the journey she did hope to make a few friends, as they’d probably all be in the same settlement for a while, at least until people decided they wanted to start exploring.
Unfortunately she didn’t know as much as she’d like to about what would happen when they got to Thear. In all the reports they were told that the first two groups of settlers were doing well, they’d survived the first two years, and they were looking forward to the arrival of the next hundred settlers. Yet Tabitha couldn’t help thinking that they were saying too little. Had she been one of the first settlers she would have wanted to talk about everything, from the flora and fauna, to the weather, to how they’d managed to survive. Not hearing any of that did make her think there might be issues when they got there, but she had no idea what they were going to be so she couldn’t plan for them.
