“Could I earn money in the towns then?” Kristen asked, not certain that really was what she wanted to do, but then, if she was a druid, that was understandable.
“Yes, by working in the guild or one of the taverns, although you can’t make anywhere near as much money as you would be able to if you were out travelling. The money is part of the reason I chose to travel, but mostly it was because I couldn’t deal with living in one place all the time. It’s amazing how quickly you do get used to this.” Thane shrugged. “At the same time it’s not something you ever really entirely get used to. There are still days when I wake up and think that I’m at home, but then I remember again that I’m here.”
Kristen nodded. “That’s understandable. I can’t imagine what it must be like to have been here as long as you have and I really hope that I find a way home soon, even though I doubt that’s going to happen. Hopefully finding yourself in a computer game works in the same way as finding yourself in any other form of fiction.”
“Has anyone worked out yet whether spending time on another world does affect your lifespan?”
“Not for certain, no, because it seems like it affects everyone differently. Maybe some people are just more capable of dealing with the strain of travelling from one world to the other.”
“That would make sense.” Thane brushed a hand through his hair. “I just can’t stop worrying that I might get back after spending years here and find that I’ve lost half my life to this world. Honestly I don’t know if I’d be able to cope with that, not on top of everything else that’s happened, but there’s nothing I can do to change anything.”
“I did suggest that we look for a magic that might send him home, but Thane doesn’t believe that something which makes his return simple could exist.” Mouse wagged his tail. “Even though I tried to convince him otherwise he gave me other examples of worlds that people had found themselves on. I believe this is different, I really do, and yet nothing I say will change his mind.”
“Mouse might be right. All of the others were stories that had an end. This games doesn’t seem to, so there could be a magic somewhere that might send us home. Going on a quest for it might actually get us somewhere, although it’s not something I’d do right now, because I want to learn more about this place.” Kristen smiled. “I might not have expected this to happen but I am going to make the most of it.”
“Good for you.” Mouse glanced over his shoulder and their eyes met for a moment. “Some of your race are like you, but the majority…” He shook his head, turning back to look in the direction he was walking. “They hide themselves away in the towns, trying to pretend that they aren’t here, even though that, to me, is a huge mistake.”
