Part 1
“Twenty four hours before what, exactly?” Alena asked, studying Willow.
“Our new home grows to a point where it will really start affecting people.” Willow sighed. “In the beginning it will grow very slowly, because it’s not expecting us, but once it’s started feeding on our magic it will grow more and more. When that happens… Alder isn’t entirely certain of the effects it will have, unfortunately, although he does think that once it reaches the houses around the park we’ll have to find somewhere else for them to live. None of the boundaries between the place of magic and the human would will be noticeable to anyone, really, but we’ll all know that they’re there, because the humans, he believes, won’t feel comfortable living within the place of magic unless they have magic themselves.”
“Do you think there will be many humans with magic?”
“I hope there won’t, but I have a horrible feeling that there will be hundreds, at least, if not thousands. The fae have always like to travel to Earth and I know that there was a time when the packs used to banish criminals here.”
Alena nodded. “Once I became Queen that stopped. Banishing any shifters to a place where they wouldn’t be able to change is something I hated, but they truly believed it was the right thing to do. They hate me for it and I don’t doubt they might have tried to get around my laws, which is one of the reasons I really don’t think I’m going to be their Queen for much longer, especially as I’ve told the packs that we have to at least attempt to work with you, instead of simply doing our own thing.”
Willow smiled. “That isn’t going to happen, Al.”
“No, but it’s worth a try. I’ve been planning what my next step is going to be, because the packs aren’t going to find the transition between Kalinia and Earth easy, not when there are going to be mixed blood shifters out there who’ll need our help to come to terms with what they are. None of the packs are going to be willing to help, as all of them will be related to criminals, or at least people they believe were criminals for whatever reason, so I really do think I need to take a step away and be Queen to the shifters who want me.”
“Being able to do the same thing would be a dream come true, but it’s not going to happen. I know I’m going to end up spending a lot of my time fighting the elders, because they believe one things and I believe another, so we’ll have to find a compromise that works for all of us, which is going to be much more difficult that I want it to be.”
“Trust me, I know.” Alena bit her lip. “That’s exactly what dealing with the packs is like. I just know that we won’t find one when it comes to the mixed bloods.”
