The Brotherhood: Kara: Introducing Kara (part 3)

Part 1
Part 2

Kara was silent during the short walk to the end of the garden. She didn’t want to talk to Daniel about Mim as they’d done enough of that during the time they were together. It had been hard, much harder than telling Tristan had been, and she was sure that she’d made a huge mistake by telling Daniel. At the time it had seemed like the right thing do, but in the time she’d had to think about what she’d done she realised that he was just as damaged as Mim had been. The only thing she could put it down to was the fact they both had a mind power.

When they got to the stones Kara almost fell into a hole that hadn’t been there before. If Daniel had wanted to he could have just let her fall but he pulled her back. She stared at the hole, which was just in front of Mim’s gravestone, before looking back at Daniel. He was staring at the hole too and Kara wished it was light enough to see the expression on his face. Something told her that he knew the hole was going to be there.

“It’s done,” a voice said from behind them, making Kara jump. “She’ll be a little confused for a while and it will take her some time to age, but she’s alive.”

“Thank you,” Daniel replied, squeezing Kara’s hand. “What about the boy?”

“He’s taking longer to come back, but I’m sure that it worked and it won’t be long until he takes his body back.”

Shaking her head in disbelief, Kara looked at Conrad’s gravestone and found that there was a hole in front of that stone too. “What have you done?” she asked, looking back at Daniel.

“I made a new friend when you left. His name is Gareth and he has a very interesting power. Would you like to explain it to Kara, Gareth?”

“There’s really not that much to explain,” Gareth said. “I can bring people back from the dead.”

Kara looked at the two holes, feeling nauseous. “You mentioned that it will take Mim some time to age.”

“It’s possible to choose an age that you wish the person to be. Daniel asked me to bring both Miriam and Conrad back at the age they would be if they’d lived their lives up to this point. I believe that means Miriam will be twenty and Conrad will be twenty-three.”

A tremor went down Kara’s spine as she looked at Daniel. “Why have you done this?”

“I wanted to meet my sister and I thought you’d appreciate it if I brought Conrad back for you.”

“You should never have done it.” She tugged her hand out of Daniel’s and turned to look at Gareth. “Will you take me to them?”

Gareth glanced at Daniel and then replied, “If you wish me to.”

Nodding, Kara followed Gareth when he started walking towards the woods that bordered the property. With every step she took she felt another tear stream down her cheek as she thought of what could happen with Mim and Conrad back. Kara knew that she needed to be calm for them because they’d just been brought back from the dead, but it felt impossible. It didn’t help that she could hear Daniel walking behind her and part of her really wanted to slap him. She couldn’t believe that he’d been stupid enough to bring Mim back to life after what had happened.

They were a couple of feet into the wood when Gareth came to a stop. In a small clearing there were two other people, one of whom Kara knew was a friend of Daniel’s, and two bodies lying on the ground. Slowly she walked towards them, not wanting to believe that Gareth really had brought Conrad and Mim back from the dead. Daniel stayed behind her, which made her feel uncomfortable.

“Is Conrad back?” Gareth asked.

“Yes, Gareth, he is. He got back just after you left.”

Swallowing, Kara looked down at the first body. The first thing she noticed was the sleeping bag. After a few minutes staring at the sleeping bag she gathered her courage to look at the body, wishing that she would see a skeleton, and found Conrad staring back up at her. He didn’t seem at all confused when he raised an eyebrow at her in the same way he always did when he wanted to know what was going on.

“Bloody hell,” she muttered, before kneeling down next to him. “Do you really want an explanation?”

“It would be nice,” Conrad replied, his voice unchanged.

“You’ve been dead for nearly eleven years. About eight months ago I went to tell Mim’s brother what happened because I thought he had a right to know and he seems to have decided that it was a good idea to bring both you and Mim back from the dead.”

Conrad stared at Kara. “Right… where are we?”

“The woods around the house.”

“Take me to the house.”

Breathing out, Kara looked at Daniel. “How am I going to explain this?”

“However you want, Kara,” he replied, shrugging.

Wanting to slap him even more she looked at Mim. “Do you want to come to the house too?”

“Please,” Miriam said, sounding lost. “I’m sorry for what happened, Kara.”

Kara shook her head. “We don’t need to talk about that right now, Mim. Let’s just get you into the house and warm before we even think about talking over what happened.” She looked between the two of them. “Do either of you feel capable of standing up?”

Conrad nodded, going to push himself up as she asked, while Mim shook her head. Standing, Kara walked over to Mim, and tried to work out what would be easier. Asking Daniel, or one of his friends, for help was the first thing Kara thought of, but she didn’t want to. It was impossible for her to trust any of them after what they’d done. Finally, she picked Mim up, looked down at Conrad who clung to Kara for support the moment she stood, and started walking in the direction of the house.

Trying not to cry again, Kara focused on getting to the house. Once she was in the house she could start to think about what it meant to have both Mim and Conrad back. She wanted to be telepathic, just for a moment, so she could call to Lucas for back-up. All she could do was project her thoughts as she walked in the hope that someone would pick them up. Instead of entering the house through the same door she’d left through she aimed for the kitchen door. When it opened she knew that someone had picked up on her thoughts and for the first time she was truly happy that she’d returned.

“Are you okay?” Lucas asked as Kara walked through the kitchen door.

“Not really, but I have other people to focus on right now.” Carefully she placed Mim into one of the chairs in the kitchen. “Lucas, this is Miriam and Conrad.”

“It’s nice to meet you both,” Lucas said, as Conrad sat in the chair next to Mim. “Would either of you like something to drink?”

“Thank you,” Kara whispered, feeling like she was about to fall apart.

“Nothing like a normal day in the house,” he replied, smiling at her.
