The Donor House: Nick: Graffiti

Dec 20, 2012 13:55

Written for LJ user ysabetwordsmith’s prompt: the donor house is graffitied.

Nick was the first to notice what had happened. He was coming back from interviewing potential donors, which had been surprisingly successful, to find more graffiti had been scribbled on the walls. Once it would have bothered him, because it meant people were still against the donor house, but now, after the house had been open for nearly two years, he’d realised there was always going to be someone who disagreed with what they’d done. Sighing, he didn’t even bother to look at what had been written, instead heading straight inside to find at least one person to help him scrub it off.

“What’s wrong?” Nadia asked, as Nick signed himself in.

“Graffiti,” he replied, sighing. “We need to get it off before morning.”

“Morgan, Dom and Caleb are all in the dining hall at the moment, and I think there might be a couple of newer donors in there too.”

“Thanks, Nadia.”

In two years the world outside hadn’t changed as much as Nick would have liked, but he was learning that small changes could make big differences in the long run. None of the donors had been comfortable with the vampires to begin with, which was entirely understandable, and being able to get to know each other had taught everyone in the house something. Then there was Caleb. Nick didn’t know exactly what he would have done if he’d been the one called to help with Caleb. He knew his reaction would never have been the same as Alice’s and he was beginning to realise that the house was going to change everything, as long as they gave it time, even though there were always going to be people who despised vampires for what they were.

As Nick walked to the dining room he focused on what they’d need to scrub off the graffiti. Normally it came off easily with a bit of scrubbing and that was why they’d never really put much thought into stopping it. It wasn’t something that happened often either, so they just dealt with it when it happened, about once every three or four months, talked about possibly painting the outside of the house anti-graffiti paint, before deciding that there really wasn’t much point.

“Hey, Morgan,” Nick said, as he almost walked into her. “I need a hand scrubbing some graffiti off the outside of the house.”

Morgan looked at him, and it was possible to see the surprise in her eyes, before she replied, “Hey, Nick.” The surprise faded away, replaced by irritation. “I really would have thought they’d got bored with that by now. It doesn’t make a difference to us and I doubt it makes much of a difference to the way other people view the house.” She sighed. “I’ll get some people together.”

“We’re never going to be universally liked.”

“I know, but graffiti seems so childish.”

“Personally I prefer graffiti to some of the other things they could be doing.” Nick shrugged. “At the beginning we were all worried about someone setting fire to the house.”
