Eh. Not even sure where to begin this one.
Work... is not happening. Or it is, but...
Right now, I am working through a temp agency. A number of temp agencies, really. And I have a number of job alerts coming my way every day, in email, from both government sites and Workopolis.
But none of it ever leads to anything Permanent. And the jobs that do last me a good chunk of time- say, 8 to 12 weeks- are few and far between. Right now, I've been off work for most of the past three weeks. I think sometimes this would not bother me, because I am getting a great deal done around here: painting the back porch, taming up the hamsters and gerbils for the pet shops, keeping on top of the house chores...
But this isn't one of those times. While we are doing OK with one income, I know that, the longer I am off work, our finances will slowly begin to go Backwards. It can only last so long (12 months?). If I could have a steady income, even if it was just enough to cover the mortgage, we'd be fine.
However working as a Temp is screwy as hell. If you never need to fall back on that, NEVER do so. Because you are on their beck and call. A half dozen times this week I have passed up work, because they just don't give enough notice. You've been up all day, been working about the house, outside in the sun (90-degree days lately), your strength already flagging by mid-afternoon- and That is when they call with a night shift!
A night shift. You've been up all day and they want you to be able to work all night, with at best 4 hours of sleep in between. What kind of advance notice is that?
But that is all that is coming my way. Not the big blocks of work which I would be far more comfortable with. Just one-night stands (literally), and who knows when the next one is coming along?
Well, I must keep trying. If I can get good hours on a day, I will take them. Meantime... There is another potential bit which I am looking into.
There is a company based in our town which deals with redeemed coupons. They punch in the person's name, how much was paid, coupon number, how much was saved, whatever... or I should say, You do. On your own comp at home. They provide the software and you do as much as you can handle each week. It pays so much per item.
I like the idea. I can work at it until I grow bored or fatigued, then take time away from it and take care of things around the house. If the time of day is not a factor, those mornings I wake up Waaaay early, would see me sitting at the comp, punching these in.
I know. It sounds Boring. But it IS legit work: all this stuff goes into a database which is used to track trends, advertising, whatnot.
And it will pay the mortgage.
I'd much rather have the big blocks of time, several times a year, and be earning twice as much. But we shall see how this goes for a time... I hope they contact me soon.
Rant ended!
