Star Trek reboot

Most remakes I approach with caution. CHANGE IS BAD. If the original is a classic, don't screw with it.

Then along came Battlestar Galactica 2003, and I was determined to hate it at first because WTF Starbuck is a GIRL and Boomer is an Asian woman instead of a black man and she's a CYLON and WTF. But . . . I fell in love. So a reboot deserves a chance. Maybe.

I grew up on Trek. My mom watched it while I was en utero. When I was older I arranged my schedule around watching episodes in syndication. I could tell you the episode within the first five seconds, usually less. I read the comics, I read all the books, even the crappy ones. Star Trek got me writing for the first time, fic set in the ST universe. I remember being 14 and in the theater waiting for Star Trek III to begin and listening in on geeky discussions about how Khan never met Chekov.

So I am dreading the upcoming Star Trek movie. "But you love BSG!" "Yes. BUT!" I do think JJ Abrams is overrated (mostly because I grew disillusioned with Lost). And I fear what they could do to my beloved series.

The cast is mostly intriguing, at least.

So. Zachary Quinto as Spock. Love him. He's got the look, but can he pull it off?

Karl Urban as Leonard "Bones" McCoy. I do like the actor, especially in LotR, but I'm not sure I can envision Eomer as my dear Dr. McCoy.

Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhura. I liked her a lot as Anamaria in PotC. I want her to shine!

Chris Pine as James Tiberius Kirk. I know zero about him. Gods help me, I loved the Shat. So I have high expectations, and I don't know if this guy can meet them.

Simon Pegg as Montgomery "Scotty" Scott. I am wary. I enjoyed Shaun of the Dead, but I don't want to see Scotty as just a slapstick character.

John Cho as Hikaru Sulu. I thought I didn't know who he was, but I checked IMDB and realized he was the Harold half of Harold & Kumar. Plus he was in the "Dead Man Dating" episode of Charmed, which was a great episode, so he gets love.

Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov. Not familiar with him at all, though he's cast as Kyle Reese in the Terminator reboot? Guy's ambitious, that's for sure. Two big pairs of shoes to fill.

So, the trailer. It made me kinda tingly. I hope not too much time is wasted on JTK adolescent antics because it gives me Anakin flashbacks and that's never good.

Spock-lar was acting waaaay too emotional. Hopefully there's a plot reason for that. I know the struggle to control emotions is part of the character (despite him grinning like a fool in the original pilot), but I don't want to see him lose it so easily.

Brief shot of Uhura taking her shirt off, which has me RAGEY. Oh look! Female character! Oh look! She's stripping! *headdesk*

Where's Nurse Chapel? Yeoman Rand?

I hope Sulu has a chance to use a sword.

And Chekov has to scream. ("Mr. Chekov, your agonizer, please.")

And it goes without saying that especially with ZQ as Spock that there will be an explosion in the Trek fandom of newbies writing Kirk/Spock slash.
