The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - Episode 20 Review

Episode 20, "Endless Eight (Part 5)"

*****SPOILERS*****

Synopsis: The exact same fucking thing that happened last episode, with different angles. (Endless indeed.)

Comments:

First, I'd like to explain my numbering system for SHnY episodes this season, as I should have gone into that long ago. No matter how you number/order the episodes from the first season of the program, there are fourteen of them (Episode 00 and thirteen more). Therefore, I counted the first new episode of the season "episode 15" and continue on from there. This is episode 20. "Endless Eight" started in episode 16.

It still isn't over.

My biggest irritation is, not that it feels like KyoAni is "trolling", but that the new season is passing by without telling a lot of interesting Haruhi tales from the books. If somebody had never read them, they would think that this is all that SHnY has to offer, the first season, then one episode of a new one plus an endless loop. The story that this corresponds to is about the size of a regular chapter, maybe a little longer, of the average Haruhi novel with one story. What they're doing is just wasting their time trying to be clever when there's so many different stories to choose from.

Most of the viewers of the first season came into this one hoping for The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya to get animated. The "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody" story becomes an element in that novel. Surely, many of us figured, after a couple of episodes of "Endless Eight" they would get to doing the more important, more popular storyline. Nope. Just more "Endless Eight".

I wonder why I'm even still blogging this show. These "Endless Eight" episodes are bringing down the value of the whole series. Maybe it's best I start pretending like this season never happened, like the third Tenchi Muyo! OVA.

Overall Score:

1 out of 5
