Kelly glanced across the table at me, munching quietly on her bagel. There was a little cream cheese smeared on her bottom lip, but I decided not to say anything about it. "Have you picked out your classes yet?"
"Yeah..." I mumbled, looking back down at the piece of paper under my hands, scribbles and scratch marks penned across it almost intelligibly. "I just have to log in and register, and then I'll be done."
"Mphhrr--" She took a moment to chew a bit. "You're time spot isn't up?" she managed to ask around another large bit.
I shook my head, glancing at the clock at the bottom right corner of my laptop. "No, it closes at 12, I still have 15 minutes, I should be fine." I glare at the page as it continues to load. "Dunno why its taking so long, though." I continued to stare it down, hoping it would somehow speed up the process for a few more moments, before sighing and taking a sip of my coffee.
She took a sip of her OJ and paused, tilting her head at me curiously. "They might be back-lagged you know. That happened to me last semester, and the whole server was down for three hours."
I drew in an awkward gasp at just the wrong moment, choking on the bit of coffee that managed to suck its way down the wrong pipe. "Wha--" I wheezed, coughing a few times. Kelly watched me in amusement, taking another bite of her bagel as I struggled for words, my lungs squeezing in discomfort. "You--gek--" I coughed violently, taking a shallow breath and re-attempting. "You were blocked out for three hours?"
"Yeah," she shrugged. "I had to wait a few more days before I could register again."
"Crap!" I exclaimed, mashing rapidly upon the refresh button. "Load, damn you! Please don't back-lag, please--"
Finally, the pages completed it's load, a small, short four word sentence pixelating across my screen. "404 error?" I read, feeling my face drop, "System overload..."
Kelly's eyebrows raised, and she took another bite of her bagel, presumingly to keep from grinning at my misfortune. "Suck," she said around the carbs.
"I hate you," I mumbled, opening up another tab. "There has to be some help line I can go to, some way they can input my numbers in around the lag, there has to be a way! If I don't get into this class, I'm going to be in school for another summer before I can graduate!"
"Sorry that your college life fails," she commented, brushing the bagel crumbs off of her lap and on to the floor.
"You're not helping. I'm going to ignore you now," I snapped back. I glanced through the technical help page, a feeling of futility falling over my head like a dark cloud of suck. "Why isn't there a tech help line?" I asked myself, continuing to skim the page.
She glanced at her phone for a moment, then crossed her arms on the table, leaning forward to shoot me a grin. "Or... you could call 911."
I glowered at her. "I hate you."
