It wasn’t supposed to happen like this. They weren’t supposed to be anything less than enemies, sworn before one of them was even born. But the second he felt that warm familiar touch, he sparked up with electricity.

They’d graduated from trysts in the forest, to nameless hotel rooms. Neither admitting that it meant anything more than hands across skin or mouths fiercely fighting for control.

Edward sat at the edge of the bed, his head in his hands while Jacob took a shower, trying desperately to remove the scent of a vampire he was trying to forget. He heard Jacob’s voice but the sound was muffled. He looked up and Jacob was dressed, hand on the door, making himself leave.

“I’ll see you.” Jacob sighed.

Edward nodded, pulling his shirt over his head with apprehension. He felt the warmth Jacob’s skin always exuded and shrugged from him. He didn’t let himself hear the screaming inside Jacob’s head.

The sound of the door slamming echoed in the room and Edward took in the remaining scent in the room, surprised at how it didn’t sting his nose.
