MOUNT VERNON HIGH SCHOOL GAY/STRAIGHT ALLIANCE PRESENTS THE "OVER THE RAINBOW" FESTIVAL
The Mount Vernon High School Gay/Straight Alliance is inviting the public to attend its ground-breaking OVER THE RAINBOW FESTIVAL at Mount Vernon High School on February 22-23, 2008 .
This first-ever event is supported by a Pride Foundation grant and is cosponsored by Skagit PFLAG (Parents, Friends & Family of Lesbians and Gays). It will open at 7 PM on Friday, February 22, with a showing of the award-winning documentary, "For the Bible Tells Me So," an intimate view of 5 Christian families struggling to reconcile their faith and their love for their gay child. The program on Saturday, February 23, runs from 10 AM - 10 PM , opening with keynote speaker Kathy Reim , president of Skagit PFLAG. Throughout the day will be 8 one-hour sessions on the following topics:
Homosexuality--Nature/Biology or Nurture/Choice? (Lynne Fouquette, Human Sexuality instructor, Skagit Valley College ) Safe Sex (local doctors Brad Berg and Melinda Ashby) How to Be a Straight Ally (Kathy Reim and GSA) The GLBT World--Terms & Issues (Kathy Reim and Dean Jackson, Pride Foundation) Legal Rights of LGBTQ Youth (ACLU) Responding to Bullying with Dignity (Terry Rhines, Safe Schools Coalition) Homosexuality and Religion (Marilyn Kallshian, pastor of Central United Methodist Church/Sedro Woolley, and Michael Bonacci) Domestic Partnerships/Gay Marriage Panel Discussion (Linda Jordan & Mary Kay Barbieri and Michael Bonacci & David Bricka )
The event will be topped in the evening with a fabulous variety show starting at 7:30 PM .
Admission to the OVER THE RAINBOW FESTIVAL is free and open to the public, although donations will be gratefully accepted!
