So I haven't really done things here in a long time, I know. Hoping to change that this year.
I've registered two stories for this year's
scifibigbang. They both involve original universes; the difference is that one is a crossover with the whole Transformers series and the other is entirely standalone.
So, story idea 1:
So the first 'verse, the one that's a crossover with Transformers, is the one I tried for last year's NaNo. I'm calling it Points of Foci for lack of a better title at this point. It's basically elemental vigilantes fighting to keep the Muggle world safe from the threat of the other elementals, who used to work with them but split over majorly differing viewpoints so long ago that the modern people barely remember the why and only the fact the split exists. In their spare time, the good guys (uncreatively titled Guardians) also go and fight crime in the Normal (Muggle) world, therefore why they're elemental vigilantes.
This 'verse also has the concept of being Soulbound, which is effectively a magic-fueled version of the Transformer-verse Sparkbond, specifically that at first physical contact the characters get low-level telepathy (vague concepts and emotions, maybe thoughts if focused on hard enough, and easy enough to shut the other out of your own head), and on completing the next steps (two ceremonies and physical affirmation) get the final bond, where even at its most closed-down on both ends both parties can still sense that the other exists.
The conceit that starts this off is that the Foci'verse main characters, post-their-own-plot (aka what I was supposed to write for NaNo) are assigned to look into sudden power potential spikes centered around one Samuel James Witwicky. Being the youngest fully Soulbound couple available (kinda have to blend in at school and all, therefore them, and it's impossible to mindjack a Soulbond), they go off to Tranquility High a few weeks before the events of TF1, and end up making new friends - Theodore with Sam and Miles, and Kairi with Mikaela. Then the movie happens... And I'll figure out other plot things later. Though I expect that the Guardians being involved means Sam and Mikaela don't ever run into S7, since one of the Guardian things is that they can form portals for instant transport elsewhere... ;)
And as things changed in the midst of me signing up, I've got two ideas for the original universe one.
Story idea 2, variant 1 (tentative title Metamotivation):
It's kinda a deconstruction of superheroing, or at least one specific aspect of it, assuming I've got the definition of deconstruction right. So you know how superpowered people always have friends and family held hostage to get to them?
Mercedes, on discovering she has powers in an accident that should have killed her, takes advantage of the fact that they won't be able to identify any remains left and flees to keep her family and friends safe. She also ends up superheroing by complete accident.
That's the backstory, at least. The main plot of the story, I hope, will be centered around the worst kind of catch-22 anyone could face:
Two classes of elementary school students have been taken hostage. She can definitely save one, and save only up to part of the other.
Or, in other words: the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, but that doesn't mean it hurts any less when the few are killed.
So it's the story of what happens before, during, and after this. Probably with a scene where she's hurt enough to end up in the hospital (a feat in itself, since she has near-instant healing and *maybe* immortality she's not willing to try to test any time soon), and the doctors help her escape the police because they appreciate what she's done - though some of the police are just following the letter of the law.
And story idea 2, variant 2 (tentative title Points of Foci):
Thinking is I'll go and properly write up the NaNo fic, Points of Foci. All of the training and flailage and Soulbound shenanigans. The year they spend on the run thanks to that mindspell. Getting Cass. Mary-Sue being stupid. All of it. And specifically as a prequel-setup kind of thing to the TF/PoF fic, so people aren't completely lost on the mechanics (though that hopefully shouldn't happen anyway).
In the meantime, go check out The Piano Guys. Epic piano and cello skills, plus a lot of things you probably wouldn't have thought possible. Many genres covered. Something in me just goes "squee!" and melts every time I sit and really watch the videos... even after the twentieth time. And hopefully many many more viewings. And I kinda want to learn the cello now (started pre-Cello Wars, XD). Just wondering how I can convert some of these to piano-only...
