Hey, it's a legit fear. I mean you know I'm not exactly a touchy-feely person, really, but I still liked holding hands with Jao occasionally when we were together in public. I felt safer when we did it in Victoria than when we did it in Bellingham, though, even if Bellingham itself is pretty liberal.
Still, I think open-mindedness is becoming more widespread. Will 'gay couples' ever just be looked at as 'couples'? Will fighting for gay rights ever be a thing of the past? Probably not in our lifetime, sadly. It might take another generation of people to see the real changes we're working for today, but I do think it will happen. And it's not just blind optimism on my part (lol me optimistic). I see small things every day that wouldn't have been acceptable at all fifty years ago.
There are still sexists and racists out there, but it's no longer socially acceptable to be so, and you're most likely gonna get stones thrown at you in public if you act like that. But you know as well as I do that once upon a time women were kept in the kitchen and ethnic minorities were...well. Duh.
Right now we're on the middle ground in terms of gay rights. It sorta depends where you're living. But that just proves it's getting better. One day it will stop being a 'thing'.
And even if my realism doubts it, I still hope we'll be alive when that happens. I wish it could be easier for all of us.
