HARRY POTTERRRRRRR
This post should have been posted earlier, but I got tired yesterday and then I embarassingly lost about SIX HOURS obsessively watching SYTYCD clips on Youtube and reading TWOP recaps. UGH AWESOME DANCING <333.
It still strikes me as very strange that this is it for the series. When the last book came out (and ooooh, how I bothered my mother with my nervous yammering if she thought that Chiang Mai's bookstores would have Book 7 and WHAT WOULD I DOOOOO if it wasn't so, oh I couldn't even bear the thought etc., etc.,) we still had a bunch of the movies to go and now? C'EST FINI, this franchise. Who wants to start laying bets on when the reboot will occur? I am so prepping my "back when I was in fandom" lecture for hypothetical future spawn or grandkids.
OH and I queued for 43 minutes to get my tickets (went by fast as I had my freshly bought copy of Tina Fey's Bossypants to keep me company. Did my fellow queuers stare at me weirdly for laughing to myself? Well yes they did, but I didn't give a fuuuuuuuuuuuck :DD). Probably not as long as y'all in the States/UK with your midnight viewings though! XDD
I think what suprised me personally the most about my own reaction was that I didn't actually cry watching it. It did feel like an era ending and there was a lot of gorgeous scenes and bits where I clutched my hands to my chest, but no waterworks. It was probably the sleep deprivation of that day setting in, the fact that I spilled nearly half of my popcorn as I was sitting down (GODDAMMIT) and my friend not really being that type to get all pumped up about the movie experience that kind of contributed to this though? IDEK.
CUE MY RANDOM, JUMBLED UP BULLET POINTS:
- McG and the statues! The giddy way she said she'd always wanted to try that spell (and how badass the CG was!), OH MINNIE <33. The scene where they were all warding Hogwarts and you could see the dome of the spells forming also gave me chills. I love battle scenes, but I also adore seeing the whole build-up and preparation for the fight.
- MALFOYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYS. Scruffy&beaten-down!Lucius remains my favorite flavor of him and poor conflicted Draco! One of the things I liked best that the movie changed from the books was the last scene of the Malfoys-- briskly walking away from it all, Narcissa right at the front.
- SPEAKING OF SLYTHERINS THOUGH, that whole "ALL OF SLYTHERIN IS VOTED OFF THE ISLAND" bit remains super rage-inducing and an overly simplistic way of damning an entire house and an entire group of children and young adults. BOO, HISS.
- As shown by the conversation on Twitter mcollinknight and I had, a character I totally imprinted on in this movie was the Gringotts albino dragon. OH MY GOD that poor beastie. The bit where Griphook was all nonchalantly mentioning that it expects pain when it hears that rattling noise and how the dragon was shown whimperings and cowering blindly, and the sores and blood from the chains around its body? sjfhjasgfjhasf traumaaaaaaaa-- which made me all the more happy when the trio busted outta there with their new steed. That first gasping breath of fresh air the dragon took outside! The way the (relative lol England) warmth must have felt on its skin! In my head!canon it is totally chilling with Nessie somewhere in the Scottish Highlands <333
- NEVILLE IS THE BOSSEST BOSS TO EVER BOSS. Besides Luna, but she can be Queen Boss to his King and they can rule in perpetual awesomeness forever. I felt their little post-battle moment in the Great Hall was all kinds of adorable, though I am still undeterred in my opinion that the best HP het ship is Harry/Luna (if we're not going for the H/D slash, of course!). But back to Neville- it was already distracting how attractive Matt Lewis has grown, and I spent a lot of the Neville scenes clapping my hands together and also eagerly anticipating the scene where he beheads Nagini with the Gryffindor sword. DAAAAAAAMN DUDE <333
- I've always been a Snape fan, so no surprise that I was also very curious to see how they would handle the whole death scene and subsequent Pensieve reveal bit. I have to agree with what some have said that the fact that they changed the location to be a boathouse was random as fuck, but it made the way they filmed the trio "seeing" Snape's death feel way more intense and actually quite disturbing this way. The thumps! And blood asdjfjdbfnaf brrr. The flashbacks were amaaaaaaaaaaazing and heartwrenching-- Alan Rickman you utter treasure! I felt that the kids they cast to play bb!Lily and bb!Severus (<3333 MY HEAAAART) were adorableness personified and generally, the kid casting in this film was aces. I'm looking at youuuuuu, Albus Severus!
- My main thought during the Ron/Hermione kiss was "I CAN'T SEE SHIT, RON YOUR GIANT GINGER HEAD IS BLOCKING THE VIEW--- ahem well, well done kids, finally you got it together. Cheers!"
- There were bits where the weird Harry/Hermione scenes over Harry/Ron or even Harry/Hermione/Ron friendship scenes inequality in the movies reared its head again, most notably BEFORE HARRY WENT OFF TO DIE. I mean, I cannot believe that Ron wouldn't have hugged his best bro then, whattt.
- THE SCENES IN THE FOREST WITH HARRY AND THE GHOSTS OF HIS PARENTS AND REMUS AND SIRIUS? AHHHHHH PERFECTION.
- The Epilogue-- honest to god I spent most of it snickering to myself over the absolutely shoddy job on aging the actors up. Just. NO. AHAHAHAHAHA :DD Again, Albus Severus is a cutie though!
And this still remains the best part of the first Deathly Hallows movie, or at least to me one of the most memorable ones. THE GORGEOUS ANIMATION, AHHH.
