What a mess. We have been on the road for a little under two weeks now and still no sign of help. Radio and television only show a map of the states with red marks telling us where the most sever outbreaks have occurred. This wouldnt even have gotten this bad if they realized that it was the bites that turned these people into the monsters that were everywhere.
After the first few weeks of the outbreak, military and the armed forces flooded the streets. seeking and destroying all remaining monsters. For a few days, we had peace. Then the wounded were taken in to try and figure out a cure. It wasnt long after they died did they get back up. Morons. I even figured out after a short while that if you were bitten, you were doomed. So now we are amazingly outnumbered by these things I have come to call "Zombies".
It is the only way I could describe them. The last radio broadcast told us to head to Roscommon MI if you were not biten. That were we were headed then. But it was at this point that we were running short on gas and all I had was the hatchet and a first aid kit my mother kept in her bathroom. Emily hasnt said much since we hit the road. My friend Paul sat in the backseat. His story was worst of all. He actually saw his parents and family die. I have been friend with him for as long as I could remember. I have never seen him this out of it. This whole thing has taken its toll on all of us. Even I have had thoughts of suicide.
The drive was about a 4 hour drive from where we took off. But we only made about half way when the car stalled. Perfect timing for god to remind me to take my car in for a tune up. "God dam it!" Paul yelled kicking the tires, "What do we do know?"
"Well its obvious we cant stay here. We have to go by foot. Or at least seek out other transportation." I replied.
"There could be hundreds of those things out there. Could we make it?"
"Well, this is a freeway. Which means we will be able to see them before they get to us. Not only that the next exit isn't to far from here. I say we start there. We can search for some supplies and hopefully find a new car."
Emily sat there with her arms folded. I didnt know if she was scared of just plain neutral. But this was our life now. we had to make it right. Get to Roscommon where there are hot showers, hot food, weapons etc.
It didnt take us long to reach the exit. We saw a gas station before anything else. If it wasnt looted already we could get what we needed from here. There didnt seem to be anyone around. I hoped that meant no unwanted guests eaither. But just in case I kept hatchet out and ready. So far I have killed four zombies since this has started. Including my own parents. I just have to keep telling myself that they are already dead. Paul kill count was in the twenties. After seeing his family killed he shown little mercy on the undead. All he had was a hammer.
Nothing took the zombies down besides a hard blow to the head. Hit anywhere else and you might as well sprinkle salt on yourself and bend over. And I was ready with my hatchet as I reached the parking lot of the gas station. "Doesnt look like there are any of them here." Paul said lowering his hammer.
"Wait." I said quietly.
I heard the crunching of broken glass under someones feet as a zombie slowly stepped out the store. He was a about ten yards away from us so we could take care of him nice and clean. We just had to make sure there wernt any more behind him. I told Emily to take a step back and then told Paul to wait and see if any follow. We found out a long time ago that it only takes one to know that your there. So far that was the only zombie there. Me and Paul ran forward quietly and swing from both sides with our weapons. Completely destroying the top of his skull. The zombie went down first to its knees then on what remained of his face.
"Ok, now we can start looking around this place for food." I said putting my hatchet back in my belt lope, "And some new wheels."
Paul folded his arms. That meant we has thinking. "It would probably be best that we dont leave anyone alone." He said, "Of course not until we reach Roscommon."
"Agreed, but now its time to see if they have any cigarettes. I think I need that more right now then this hatchet."
We gathered whatever we could carry and put it into a shopping cart we found outside. "Alright, I think we can start looking for our new car now." I said dropping the last box of ho-hos in the cart.
"I wonder what else is in this town. Maybe we can fire up a grill somewhere and make burgers." Emily said with a smile.
Paul laughed but I could tell he hoped for the same thing.
We stepped into the street and our jaws dropped. We have been so distracted with the gas station that we couldnt see that it was blocking our view of the rest of the town. Paul even seemed to be speechless. There was a campfire all lite up and three people in blankets sitting around it. Two girls and an old man. We called out to them waving our hands in the air as we walk toward the camp fire. "Mind if we join you?" Paul asked.
"Not at all." the man said, "Its about to get dark soon and it would be nice to have some numbers to keep watch."
"I have one question." I said, "How have you survived here? We just knocked off one of those things before we saw you."
"Really? Must have roamed out here. This place has been deserted for weeks. I made sure of that."
"You? All by yourself? How?" Paul asked.
"Well there were only about twelve of them and I had my pistol."
"Ha! We could use one of those." I said.
"I'll show you were I found it tomorrow. There is a gun store right up the road."
"My god, that would be great."
Later that night we sat around the fire drinking hot cider right out of the pot. "So whats your story?" I asked the old man.
"My name is James. These are my daughters Amy and Joy. We were camping when this whole thing started. My wife was killed about three weeks ago. We picked up a child who was bitten last week but she died. I had to take care of her myself. We have been here for the last three days. I was a cook at a four start restaurant. But my skills aren't much use for a war like this. But I have held up so far."
"Im Joy. I am 24. My boyfriend and I came out here late to camp. When we got there it was already taken over by those monsters. He died protecting me. I have been with my Dad ever since."
"My name is Amy. I am 15. I dont really have a story. I have been with them since this all started. I just hope help comes soon. Like last time. I am sure since we know that the bites are what cause this to happen we can do better this time. I just wish they would get here already."
"How about you guys?" James asked, "What brings you here?"
"My name is Paul. I am 22. My home was invaded by over a dozen zombies. I watched my whole family be devoured by those things. After I realized I couldnt save them I...well lets just say I am not getting the medal of honor anytime soon."
"Im Jack. I am 21 years old. Me and my sister came home after being attacked twice. Once by some guy we hit with the car. And another by some lady my sister tryed too help on the freeway. When we returned home our parents were already turned. I had to murder them both. Something I will have to take with me to hell, but I did it to protect Emily."
"Which is me. My brother likes to tell to many sad stories. He did what he had to do. The last broadcast we heard told us to head to Roscommon. So thats what we are doing now. But our car stalled out in the freeway. We came here looking for a new one we could borrow."
"Your out of luck missy." James said, "If there was one here we would have been out of here. But the place has been holdin fort so far. We are right out in the open so we cant be spotted without us spotin them to."
"I guess thats true." Paul said, "But I dont think it will be safe for long. It only take one to know your here then more will follow. I am not sure if anyone is coming to save us. I think thats what that last broadcast was for. To tell people to just show up because they are not coming to help us. Maybe they new anyone infected wouldnt be able to make it there. Safe but also selfish. Never the less, I think you guys should come with us."
"We'll sleep on it. I havent had much sleep in the last few days. I would appreciate it if one of you stood watch for my tonight." James said rubbing his eyes.
"I'll do it." I said," Its the least I could do."
Dusk/ around 2:30
Paul kind of gave me a scare. "How ya holdin up?" He asked.
"Dont sneak up on me like that bro." I said shaking a bit.
"It will keep you on you toes." I replied patting me on the back.
"What are you doing up?" I asked.
"I couldnt sleep knowing my friend was the only one awake. You and Emily are the only family I have left."
"I know what you mean. I am still grieving over the death of my Mom and Dad. The worst part is I dont even know how I did it. I let the guy I hit and the lady on the freeway go but not them. I fell so evil."
"We all have to do things we are not proud of. Now more then ever. The worst part is that we have to be stone cold. To us pain doesnt exist. Only survival."
"Your right. There are probably many people out there who need help. But there are also people who will try and hurt us."
"Thats been bothering me too. After awhile we wont have to worry about the zombies, we will have to worry about those who now live under thier own law. The trick is to know who to trust." paul said lighting two cigarettes and handing me one.
"What do you think of this guy."
"He wants to protect his daughters. He is ok in my book. But we must be careful. Of everyone. And most importantly we cant loss sight of who we are. Once we snap, we die."
"I can keep it together if you can." I said extending my hand for a shake.
"Dont worry about it brother." he replied accepting my handshake.
The next morning James walked me and paul to the gun store. "Take what you need fella's. I wont rat ya out." He said opening up the doors.
"Have you ever fired a gun before Paul?"
"Once with my Dad. But that was at a shoting range." He said while examining a magnum, "I think I am going with this one. It looks like enough stopping power."
"I think I like the 45. Its light and seems easy to use."
"Now where can I find a 12 gauge?" He asked himself, "Ah here we are."
"He should probably get one for my sister. She shouldnt be without a weapon like she has been."
"Agreed, we should also find a better melee weapon while we are here."
It was then we heard the sound of many footsteps crush the snow. It sounded like it was coming from right outside. Me, Paul and James ran outside to face our horror. "The must be dozens of them!" Paul said lifting his gun, "What do we do?"
Paul was right. There were about a few dozen of them almost 14 yards away. It was like I said. It only takes one to know your there. And they knew. We didnt have much ammo for the guns in our holsters. And we would need ammo. I had to go back in. Did I have enough time?
"PAUL GO GET EMILY! I WILL MEET YOU BACK AT THE CAR!"
